If people hadn't voted down Issue 2 in 2010 the state would have had more money for the schools. Ohio votes down pro-business candidates and policies (hurting our ecomomy and state revenue) and then wonders why funding get's reduced to schools and communities. Sad

Issue 2 did nothing for pro-business issues. You can't promote lower middle class taxes and then decide to cut the salaries of workers who are middle class. Would be the same as increasing taxes on anyone else but at a much higher level. That argument doesn't hold water. Pay teachers administrators more who are in school districts that have demonstrated excellence. Why expect a government handout when you will never pay, in taxes, what it cost to educate your children?

Thank Governor Kaisich for gutting education and local budgets...but "We balanced the budget in the State of Ohio without raising taxes." Riiiight!

Very dissapointing....our district is top in the state and unable to pass a levy....people just don't understand what the ramifications of this will be.

Many of the people above want to take money from the government but act like they are saving the government money. They feel that their children should have gotten an education paid for by others and just decide that they don't think they should have to pay anymore. Until a person's property taxes equal the cost of education, they are just expecting a free ride from taxpayers.

It makes me very sad that people would rather save a few bucks on taxes then be concerned with our schools....we moved here last year FOR the schools..now i wonder if that was a bad choice..

Avon, Amherst, Bay, and Rocky River passed their levys. I believe Avon asked for 2.34 mill. Avon Lake asked for 9.04 mill. Lori, what are the dollar amounts for Amherst, Bay, and Rocky River?

As I've said several times above... Many of the people against this levy act as conservatives but actually like taking a handout from the government. Many believe other taxpayers should be responsible for floating their kids an education and then decide they just don't feel like doing it when their children are out of school.

At least we will have adequate safety forces with our EMS!!!

The City of Avon Schools are rated Excellent with Distinction vs. Avon Lake as Excellent but City of Avon Schools spend only $7,181 per student for 2011 vs. Avon Lake City Schools $10,904 (reference Ohio Department of Education Finance group). That is a big difference without a good explanation as to why. Hard to vote for a levy that causes a 16% increase in real estate taxes without more information. I have no problem paying for good schools and good teachers - but prove that the school district is doing what it can to control all costs. Maybe come with a smaller levy this time. I for one found the numbers published by the schools didn't really add up until late in the campaign. Better information would have helped this election result out.

Ahhh...did you READ the material the district put out...pretty evident as to the cause, i.e., Kasich screwed us, power plant value dropped, etc. You too should consider moving.

Hey AvonLaker1234 - Kasich didn't "screw us", he balanced the budget, is that a bad thing? Yes, it stinks that education took a hit, but that's what happens when you BALANCE a budget...something has to go. The funding of public schools is so unfair and messed up and it's been that way for so long so you can't put it on Kasich alone. I wish more government officials understood the process of a budget and how it works and further understood you can't just keep spending, but that's another story. The thing I don't understand is why aren't people more up in arms about why the city of Avon Lake isn't doing more to attract new businesses to the area? They knew the plant would be closing - it was a given with all the regulations passed by Obama and yet we just waited and are now being reactive as opposed to actively pursuing new business so it wouldn't have been as devastating when the inevitable was announced. I voted for the levy because I have kids in the system and it is a wonderful school district, but in doing so, something in our household would have to wait or not happen because that is how a budget works. I actually applaud Governor Kasich for being fiscally responsible, but wish that he would do something about how the funding is handled in the first place, just like I wish the governor before him would have addressed it, and so on and so on....! But until it's fixed, I don't want our children to pay the price.

AvonLakeMom, The state budget is balanced every year. It is state law. Every Governor has balanced the budget.
