Avon 'Chicks' Looking for 3 Tons of Food This Year

Start stocking now for Aug. 12 food drive.

In its third year, Chicks Against Hunger is continuing to make strides and is hoping to raise three tons of food during its most recent food drive.

“Chicks” started after one of its founders, Kim Krall, lost her job during the recession and saw first hand how someone’s life can be affected by unemployment and wanted to make a difference.

After meeting with the Second Harvest Food Bank Board chair, identifying the increasing need in Avon and Avon Lake, Krall approached her two best friends, fellow Avonites, Ann Marie Nyikes and Sherry Lunt, asking to help with a food drive.

Since then, they’ve held several events, and have already reached 42 percent of their food, with a collection of 2,537 pounds of food.

“This year’s goal is to collect three tons of food,” Krall said.

Eventually, that food reaches several Lorain County food centers, including the Second Harvest Food Bank or North Central Ohio.

:Second Harvest distributes products to more than 120 member agencies that include food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and supplemental food programs.  These hunger relief programs distribute food at no cost to low income families, children and the elderly in Crawford, Erie, Huron and Lorain Counties,” Krall said.

The Chicks are hoping residents in the area will step up and provide non-perishable items including the “super six.”

The “super six” most needed items are:  cereal, peanut butter, vegetables (canned only), tuna fish (canned only), soup (canned only), and beef stew (canned only). Any non-perishable items will be accepted.

The donation drop off day is Sunday, Aug. 12 from noon – 3 p.m. at The Retirement People office (37271 Colorado Ave./SR 611) in Avon.
