Avon Middle School Principal Talks Traffic
Dr. Craig Koehler shows what between-periods is like
When the bond issue to build a new Avon Middle School has been discussed in recent months, the current and future crowding of the school often comes up.
In story comments on Avon Patch, here are some of the comments that talked about crowding:
- "Avon has grown dramatically in the past 20 years. I cannot imagine the crowding with the students now. They have at least 3 periods dedicated to lunch - some kids are eating lunch 2 1/2 hours after breakfast!" -- Terry (no last name)
- "And many kids can't even lock (their) lockers because it's too crowded to try to unlock it and get to class on time." -- Gina Tilton
- "Definitely never go to school between class periods - you will get trampled!" --Terry Kraus
So on Monday, I went to the middle school and shot video of one of the four-minute breaks between class periods to get a student's-eye view. Check out the video here to see some of it, along with comments from principal Dr. Craig Koehler on some of the challenges he said students and staff face during class changes.

When I was a junior high school student (many years ago) I attended an overcrowded school in New Jersey. Once I dropped my books between classes in the hallway. I couldn't pick them up because there were so many students passing by I couldn't bend down. So I just sat on the floor, cried and waited for the halls to clear. It may not seem like a big deal when you're an adult, but as a kid, it was very upsetting. I think adults should try to put themselves in the kids' shoes.

That hallway needs a crossing guard!
