Avon Sports Roundup: Eagles Win WSC Track Meet

Wiley, Fasciana,Sturm lead Avon to winning effort

Avon junior won the 110-meter and 300 hurdles and ran the first leg of the winning 4x200 relay team as the Eagles boys’ track and field team captured the West Shore Conference Championships at on Friday.

The Avon boys finished with 189 points beating out North Ridgeville (148), Midview (89), Bay (84), Vermilion (55), Rocky River (57) and Elyria Catholic (35). The Avon girls didn’t win an individual event and took fourth with 116 points. Rocky River won with 161 points.

Wiley finished in a time of 15.35 seconds in the 110 hurdles and 40.91 in the 300 hurdles. Joining Wiley on the 4x200 team were sophomore Antonio Orr, freshman Jake Bitter and sophomore (1:31.48).

Sophomore Austin Fasciana won the 3200 (10:10.47), while freshman Paul Sturm won the discus with a mark of 125 feet, 7 inches. 

Avon freshman Ben Smith, junior Nick Telidis, sophomore Corey Hermann and Fasciana combined to win the 4x800 (8:29.12).

Avon celebrates its athletes

Avon High celebrated 11 student athletes in a commitment ceremony at the school’s auditorium on Thursday.

Those recognized included: , Tiffin, women’s track and field; , Findlay, men’s soccer; , Toledo, football; Claude Grey, Ohio Wesleyan, men’s basketball; , Dayton, football; , Ohio Wesleyan, women’s basketball; , John Carroll, football; Joe Mementowski, Notre Dame College, baseball; Emily Starr, Allegheny College, women’s cross country and track and field; , Baldwin Wallace, baseball and Zack Wetzig, Cleveland State, men’s fencing.
