Avon Voters Will See Two Levies on May Ballot

Neither levy will result in a tax increase.

Avon City Council introduced a resolution at the Feb. 4 council meeting to submit two replacement levies on the May 7 Primary Election.

Neither levy is a tax increase.

Street Maintenance and Repair Levy

The city will be asking voters to approve a 1.9-mill 5-year renewal levy for street maintenance and repair. The millage represents a 10 percent decrease from the 2.0 mill rate previously approved on Nov. 6, 2007.

The Lorain County Auditor’s Office has certified the value of the city at $730,797,100, allowing the city to determine what millage is required.

If approved, the levy would generate $1,316,438 annually during the life of the levy.

Council president Dan Zegarac said the levy would cost property owners $58.19 per $100,000 of home valuation.

“If you look at how well the streets are, it’s a pretty mild sum of money,” Zegarac said.

“It helps pay for salt and road maintenance,” Smith said.

Park Renewal Levy

The city will also be asking voters to approve a .45-mill, 5-year replacement tax levy to provide for the maintenance, management and operation of public parks and recreational activities.

The levy will replace a .50-mill levy approved in the 2008 General Election.

If approved, the levy would generate $311,787 annually during the life of the levy. It would cost homeowners $13.78 for each $100,000 of home valuation.

Will you be supporting the levies?

This renewal is lridiculous; what many of our citizens don't know is that townhomes and condo's pay city taxes at the prevailing rate for city services i.e. snow removal, street repair, tree maintenance, etc and DO NOT RECEIVE THESE SERVICES then subsequently must pay maintenance fees to their respective associations for the services NOT provided by the city, in essence this city and private homes are being subsidized by condo's and townhouses in addition to taxes collected by the city. Previous attempts to get the city of AL to provide a modicum of services for tax dollars collected has been rejected. I shall not vote for one levy as long as the city continues to treat condo's, etc as second class citizens.

Yes, I know that everybody living in the townhomes and condos have solar powered flying cars that don't use any of the city infrastructure that is funded by these levies.

Hugh Hendry's comment is correct...condos are taxation without representation (so to speak) regarding "services"...seniors do not get the breaks they should as they do in many east coast states.

I guess seniors living in condos dont use public streets and utilize the safety services.

If they are renewals will it actually increase the tax payment or just continue the current payment?

It's an increase as values have increased since the 2007 levy.......in reality values have not increased but tax valuations have.......if the dollars you paid would not increase they would state that.....they don't because the cant......the $$ you pay will increase.....

It looks like a decrease for homeowners, as the levy millage rates are smaller than the expiring levies they are replacing.

Street maintenance and repair: 1.9 mil replacing the existing 2.0 mil levy
Parks and recreation: 0.45 mil replacing the existing 0.50 mil levy

To be clear... these levies are for Avon, not for Avon Lake.
