Deer Vs. Car Problem Is Not Going Away: Letter

Resident shows us damage after car hits deer. Upload photos of your damaged vehicle.

Editor's note: Jim Moyse provided a photo of his Ford Focus after a collision with a deer.

To the Editor:

Thanks for the posting of the video showing Officer Cantleberry's recent meeting with an Avon Lake deer.

I recently met with one, but unlike officer Cantleberry, my insurance company had to cough up $5,500 and I was on the hook for $500.

Local government talks about not having enough money to do anything about the deer problem, but if you took an average between what it cost to repair the cruiser and what it cost to fix my Focus, local citizens have paid out $63,000 just this year on the city's highways.

I realize the state has a large role in this matter, but I plan to continue urging the city to do all it can to reduce the problem. THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT'S NOT GOING AWAY!

Until recently I was a proponent of allowing the herd to naturally regulate it's own population. Given enough time their numbers will die down on their own - but probably not until the end of summer when all the vegitation dries up from the heat and their food source diminishes even more. However, in the last week I've gone running in the Kopf Reservation twice. Both times I saw two to three dozen deer that were just skin and bones, they were obviously starving. It broke my heart to see them in such condition, and so many! They are everywhere in that park, I don't think I can run there anymore because it's too upsetting to see them in such a state. They don't even bother to run away anymore when people approach. I think it's cruel to allow them to suffer so when we could do something. This situation needs to get resolved.

Thank you for sharing your observation, Andrea. I continue to be concerned about this issue. I hit a deer on Walker Rd. two years ago; fortunately it was only my car that was damaged. I feel like it is only a matter of time until someone is seriously injured in a car/deer accident. Almost every day I see deer near or walking across one of the major streets in Avon Lake. I would much rather see our community be proactive about this issue. I think that thinning the herd would be best for both the people and the wildlife.

7 deer on Canterbury and Belmar behind Troy. 3 deer on Walker Road by the Reserve. 5 deer in the field across from Fenik's on RT83, 3 deer in the fields on Pin Oak Parkway and 2 deer across from Giant Eagle on Walker. THAT WAS JUST YESTERDAY'S TRAVELS.

People need to be more observant when they are driving- it is not a surprise that deer are in the area. People speed down my street all the time. There are other ways to manage populations then killing. If you don't like the deer- move into a condo downtown.
