After a 32-year, $32-million bond issue to build a new middle school suffered a narrow defeat in the November election, it was put back on the ballot for the March 6 primary vote.
There was a public forum to discuss the bond issue on Monday, but attendance was sparse. Another forum is set for Feb. 22 at Avon Middle School.
Where do you stand on the idea of building a new middle school? The district has said that building new not only makes good sense economically, but will help solve crowding issues at Heritage North and Heritage South, and free up the existing middle school for the students at Village.
Cast your vote in our poll and share your views in the comments.
While there are many who know they either support or oppose it, there are also undecided voters. What do you think of what the district and levy support committee have done to make the case for a new middle school? What do you think they should do before March 6 to get you to vote "yes?" And what would it take for you to vote against the bond issue?
Is there more you want to say on this and other school matters? Write a letter to the editor, or sign up to blog on Avon Patch.

The existing middle school is a joke. My daughter tells me that kids can not even open their lockers in between classes because it is so crowded. Also, when I was in Junior High we had much more extracurricular activities such as Friday Night programs and had more complete programs such as wood/metal shop, Gym everyday etc..... It is understandable why only 69% of our Avon kids are ready for college. Does anyone who does not support the schools understand what this means? It means students are taking courses in College in which they should have learned in Avon Schools. It means more burden on 2 and 4 yr institutions using tax dollars to educate these kids. It means that less tax revenue will be coming into the coffers to pay for the baby boomers and seniors entitlements. I moved here 12 years ago for the schools and personally I am not that impressed. If I and I know other parents had a do-over, Chagrin Falls looks pretty good now.

I do not want my tax dollars wasted by throwing money at an old building that currently can't even handle the power needs of the building. 60+ years ago when the Middle School was built it didn't need to be "wireless" or have the electric capabilities to run mulitiple computers, copy machines, air conditioning or extensive lighting. A new building is definitely more cost effective and can be built within budget to fill all the needs required to educate our growing student body. We have a great school system that could definitely do more if we made sure there was adequate space for our students to learn.

Dear Avon Residents,
Please VOTE NO for the middle school levy this March. It seems to be just a big money grab by the bureaucrats. According to the
information put out last election, these community looters can save us taxpayers $12 MILLION DOLLARS by renovating the middle we
already have ( http://avon-oh.patch.com/articles/32-million-middle-school-levy-going-on-november-ballot). Do they have no concept of just how much money that really is. What are the hidden motives for unnecessarily overcharging the taxpayers of this community by 60% ?
Thank you for your time,

I am appalled at the lack of community support for the school system in the City of Avon. So much so, that our family is seriously considering moving out of Avon because of that lack of support. I don't think I want my daughter in Avon Schools.
There is more to excellence than test scores. A new building is necessary.
Overcrowded, outdated buildings are not only unsafe, they are not conducive to learning. Avon is considered an "affluent" suburb. I will send my child to private school, pay private school tuition, pay my property taxes, which means I have no benefit in regards to the schools, but I am still required to pay taxes. But, I will still vote YES for the levy because I care about my community and my property values. This levy is going to cost an extra $38.29 per year per $100,000 of property value. The average home value in Avon is $200,000 , so about $79 a year for the levy. Who in Avon really cannot afford that ? I Think the community leaders are very forward thinking and we are getting off cheap compared to surrounding communities.
You can pay now or you can pay later.
