The first year of what is expected to be an annual tradition, the Avon Lake Kiwanis Kids Fest drew more than 200 visitors to Weiss Field July 30.
Fair organizer Kyle Maurer estimated two truck loads of school supplies were donated to assist clients of Avon/Avon Lake Community Resource Services and more than $150 in monetary donation.
"CRS will be filling backpacks this week," Maurer said.
Maurer said with no advance presale tickets to guage attendance and with so many other events going on across the city on the same day, he had no idea what to expect.
"We were pleasantly surprised to entertain a steady stream of families throughout the three hour festival. As expected, the kids loved the activities we had planned, but even better than seeing the smiles on their faces was watching the boxes of donations stack higher and higher."
Maurer said he hopes the supplies gathered will stretch a long way to help out as many families as possible.
"What we know for sure is that a new Avon Lake summer tradition was born," he said.
