Avon Election Results: Incumbents Win, Levies Lose

It was a good night for incumbents and a bad night for levies in Avon.

One-hundred percent of the votes in Avon are in.

In the elections for Avon City Council, he at-large race had challenger Mark Yonchak and incumbents Clinton S. PelfreyCraig Witherspoon and Dan Zegarac competing for the three open spots. Zegarac was the top vote-getter with 3,792 votes (29.43 percent), followed by Witherspoon (3,704 votes), Pelfrey (3,551) and Yonchak (1,838) 

The Ward 1 race saw incumbent Bryan Jensen defeated challengers Steven BalmertBob Butkowski and Dennis Ginley. With 100 percent of the vote in, Jensen finished with 864 votes, 45.16 percent of the votes. 

Incumbent Daniel Urban defeated challenger Susan Harrison in Ward 4 by a wide margin, 1,056-474. Harrison entered the race in August after resigning as president of the Avon Board of Education in July. The district announced at the time that she was relocating to Oklahoma.

Dennis McBride in Ward 2 and Kevin Ward in Ward 3 ran unopposed in their elections.

Heather Mahoney, who was appointed to Avon Local Schools Board of Education in August, defeated challenger Dr. Jeffrey Oberg in the race for the seat.

Mahoney won with 3,530 votes, 63 percent of the vote. 

Mahoney was named to the board to fill the open spot after board president Susan Harrisonresigned in July. Mahoney is a former president of Avon Early Childhood PTA.

Incumbent board members Kevin Romanchok, who has been acting president since Harrison's resignation, and Art Goforth won their unchallenged races.

Issue 23, a charter amendment regulating residential lot sizes in future subdivisions, won easily.

Issue 8, the levy to build a new Avon Middle School, and Issue 22, the levy for Lorain County Joint Vocational Services, were defeated. The proposed Lorain County sales tax increase also lost.
