A hot summer day morphed into a perfect summer evening for a lakefront wine festival and by several accounts, up to 1,500 people showed up for the city's first wine festival at Veterans Memorial Park.
The event, which featured five Lorain County wineries and numerous local restaurants, was so popular, several food vendors ran out of food.
The occasion also marked a first for the city, allowing alcohol sales and use in a park. The city received a one-day only permit to allow spirits in Veterans Memorial Park, which has since returned to "dry" status.
The wine festival is the second of three city-supported festivals held this summer to highlight the city and spur economic development.

Nice event. Hopefully they will add additional wineries so that the lines aren't so long, and so there are more options.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this a great event, especially the sponsors: Commerce Benefits Group, Busch Funeral Home, Thogus Products, Ford, GenOn, Fifth Third Bank, Learwood Square, PolyOne, Lubrizol and St. John Medical Center. To be clear, the city support referenced in the article was not financial. These events are put on by Avon Lake Waterfront, a private non-profit organization funded solely by Avon Lake businesses, not tax dollars.
We hope to see everyone at the Heritage Festival on August 10th and we're already planning for next year.
