'Harlem Shake' Video Could Get Some Avon Lake Baseball Players in Trouble
Footage shot in Avon Lake locker room includes vulgar behavior and was posted on YouTube.
Some members of the Avon Lake High School baseball team will face some sort of discipline after vulgar footage of the team was posted on YouTube, the popular media site that is open to the public.
The video featured team members performing to the popular Harlem Shake.
The 30-second video opens with about a dozen members of the team readying for play, while one featured student simulates a sex act, while dressed, on a trashcan. After approximately 15 seconds, the entire team is featured dancing, some in compromising positions and some simply dancing.
The video was taken down March 11 as soon as school officials were notified.
The video appears to have been taken in the Avon Lake locker room, where a large “AL” logo was visible on the floor throughout the footage.
The video, uploaded March 4, had almost 700 views by March 11, including some from Avon Lake parents.
Avon-Avon Lake Patch was tipped off by a reader happened across the video while searching for Shoremen sports.
“While doing a Google search for Avon Lake sports ... a suggestion came up on the latest video craze, the Harlem Shake done by the Avon Lake High School Baseball team,” the tipster said by email. “I thought it might be fun to watch it. Boy was I wrong! It was disgusting.”
Hours later, another reader notified Patch with similar concerns.
Superintendent of Schools Bob Scott said the students involved will face consequences.
"It was completely inappropriate and appropriate actions will be taken,” Scott said.
The matter has been turned over to include the principal and athletic director.
“Generally, our kids are good kids, but we understand they sometimes make decisions that aren’t very wise,” Scott said. “They will obviously be disciplined.”
Scott said the district will start from a historic standpoint and see what other kind of discipline has been handed out previously.
Discipline could come from two places. Scott said the school will mete out punishment, but since the footage was shot in the locker room, there could also be discipline from the athletic office.
According to the Avon Lake handbook, students could face discipline on a number of fronts, including a Sexual Conduct offense that states, “Students are not permitted to engage in sexual conduct or contact while on school premises, at any school sponsored event, or while otherwise under school authority.”
A second offense under “Abusive, harassing, bullying, cyber bullying and/or disrespectful behavior,” states, “Students shall not engage in any obscene, abusive, profane, or degrading gestures or expressions…(more deleted)."
The handbook also states “appropriate consequences for the individual student will be based on the type of offense, the frequency and the seriousness of the conduct violation, the circumstances of the violation, and the student’s behavior history.”
Determination of what penalty to apply will be made by the appropriate administrator, consistent with Ohio law.

Looks like an extra curricular sport doesn't really keep kids out of trouble.....
Let me guess. The weight room must have been closed too.
This is too funny.

Shame on them for having fun and disgracing the always golden Avon Lake High School by posting a video of semi-inappropriate dancing as teenagers! High school dances are so much more chivalrous and no adult has ever engaged in anything half as "offensive." Expel them from the school and let them get into actual trouble! Can you sense the sarcasm dripping there? Give me a break...actually, give THEM a break.

As an Avon lake grad, I'm literally repulsed that my alma mater has no ability to take a joke. You can look up Harlem shake videos for hours; there's nothing offensive about them, it's just a trend. But of course, when you have a bunch of stuffy old bureaucrats who don't deal with students in a daily basis, you get idiotic decisions like this. Students don't check their rights to free expression at the door. The administration would be wise to remember that.

See, the Trent Toy clause was one of the worst things that could happen to this usually behaved high school on the lake. Outrageous someone could show their rump to girls for a couple of chuckles. I think these kids didn't do much wrong, but after the 2010 Toy incident, I believe there needs to be repercussions. Shame.

The administration officials need to spend their time on other important issues and leave these kids alone...this coming from a fellow alumni and athlete. Get off the kids backs and let them be the age they are.

What a lot of attention given to nothing... no harm was done, I did not take offence (but some sure did, as fast as it was taken down) and why? We should really be using comon sense, not the knee jerk reaction of some who are in ultimate power. Its almost funny how delightful the comment "students involved will face consequences".
Also it strikes me odd the comment "the school will mete out punishment, but since the footage was shot in the locker room, there could also be discipline from the athletic office".... Last I checked isn't the athletic office part of the school? AND....
"Determination of what penalty to apply will be made by the appropriate administrator, consistent with Ohio law." LAW??? what law was broken?
In this day and age, god forbid you eat your pop tart in such a manner that it has a loose resemblence to a gun... thats going to get you suspended....
Seems we are trying to raising a bunch of vanilla, no fun kids, rather that taking into consideration that our kids (not the "school district") earns the distinction award year after year. Our kids are good kids, they just are not seen that way by some...
IMHO

Apparently the after hours supervision at the school is a little lacking. Good reason just to close it down after classes end.
It must have been painful to post this story. With all of the "great" stories that end up being a catalyst for continued support for further taxation, there is finally one that points out the inadequacies of the system.
The video is not really the issue. Didn't get a chance to see it. I could care less. The issue is about supervision. Or the lack of it, apparently. But I am sure the performances were amazing and passionate.
It appears that the focus of the schools should be on education and not fostering athletic success, and or,from what was written, bad choreography.
Back in the day when schools were just about educating kids, they at least taught us enough to not get caught.. Sarcasm intended on that one.

I am a parent here and I saw the video. I understand why Patch did not post it. While it certainly looked like fun and games and it might have been suitable for these kids "private collection" it had no business on a public website. Had that been my child I would have been so embarrassed. Kids riding each other like cowboys with your sons "cheeks" showing is not what you need being shown on the internet. This article doesn't begin to describe the locker room antics I saw.
And I won't even start with what they were doing with the baseball bats. Harmless fun? Yes it was, but not all harmless fun is meant to be broadcast for anyone to see. Trust me, these boys parents did not want to see the full video.
I was more concerned that some of the boys were younger and some creepo would pass it around. Thank you to whoever took it down.

How about maybe 50 or 100 people saw this video but now more are getting introduced to it because of some on line Press writer with nothing to do. Seriously, Wow...these kids are kids. How about the administrators, instead of suspending, send them a message and teach a lesson at the same time and make the kids clean the whole locker room? Or clean the whole weight room. Or maybe mop and wax the cafeteria floor and spend time doing that instead of losing school time? Very stupid decision to suspend kids for a small prank in my mind.

Disgusting, seriously. The kid was pelvic thrusting a trash can. If you have kids you have obviously done something along those lines. No one is swearing, no one gets naked, no one is shot, no one is hurt, killed, raped, beat, cut, choked, doing drugs, drinking alcohol, or destroying property. How is this at all disgusting. Its time for everyone to grow a spine and just stop being offended by nonsense. On a side note, when is the school and the police department going to start enforcing the drug policy at the high school. Its no secret that drugs are present everyday at that school. It's not that they don't know, it's that they are more worried about getting a ribbon or an award for being a superior high school. It's time to start enforcing the whole student hand book, not enforcing rules because the public finds out something happened.

Happy Gilmore did this with: a golf club, a hockey stick, a construction cone, and a gas pump nozzle, to name a few...and it was rated PG-13.
