How Diverse is Avon Becoming? Census Tells Us

Avon's population boom was the first big story out of the .

The , from 11,446 in 2000 to 21,193 in 2010.

This past week, more figures released by the Census Bureau give more details to Avon's growing diversity.

Here are some of the highlights from those figures:

White and older

While Avon is becoming more diverse, it remains a largely white community, with 19,589 residents identified as white.

Whites also make up most of Avon's older population, with 3,667 of those 3,778 ages 60 and up identified as white.

The median age for whites is 39.9 years, compared to 38.4 years for the whole population.

Blacks are younger

The black/African-American population grew more than fivefold from 2000 to 2010, from 82 to 480.

Of those 480, 222 are 19 years old or younger. Two-hundred and twenty-seven are between the ages of 20 and 59. The median age for blacks/African-Americans in Avon is 23.6.

There are 153 black/African-American households in Avon. Of those, 124 are classified as family households, defined by the Census Bureau as "consist(ing) of a householder and one or more other people related to the householder by birth, marriage, or adoption."

Young Hispanic population

The Hispanic/Latino population grew from 147 in 2000 to 711 in 2010.

Children and working-age adults made up the large majority of that group, with 334 between the ages of 20 and 64, and 348 under the age of 19.

The median age for a Hispanic/Latino is Avon is 20.6 years.

There are 171 households in Avon identified as Hispanic/Latino. Of those, 142 are designated family households.

Youth mostly white

There are 6,753 people aged 19 and under in Avon. Whites account for 6,101 of that group.

The largest group among youths is ages 5 to 9, with 2,065 people.
