I-90 Nagel Interchange Opening Dec. 20

Ribbon cutting for long-awaited project will be at 10 a.m.

The long awaited I-90 Nagel Road Interchange is scheduled to officially open on Thursday, Dec. 20 at 10 a.m.

Avon Mayor Jim Smith and other dignitaries will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Attendees are asked to enter the event from the north, from the intersection of Chester Road and Nagel Road.

"After everyone clears out (from the ceremony), the road will be open to traffic," a source at the mayor's office said.

Project manager Don Damyanic said the road should be open by noon.

"Motorists are strongly urged to use caution while becoming familiar with the new lane assignments, signals and traffic patterns," Damyanic said.

An invitation-only reception will follow at Petitti’s Garden Center in Avon following the ceremony.

On Dec. 5, Smith announced the interchange would open by the end of the month.

Reports have been coming from the mayor’s office with regularity, including the opening of three roads last week, near the Interchange.

The groundbreaking for the interchange was Sept. 14, 2011. The concept was first discussed 16 years ago.

Smith expects state and local officials, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and NOACA officials to be present and speak as well.

The project, 16 years in the making, is opening approximately nine months ahead of schedule.  It involved a drawn out battle with city officials in Cuyahoga County, many of whom initially opposed the project.

“Don and (City Engineer) Rob (Knopf) have done a great job,” Smith told Patch last week. He also cited cooperation with ODOT and Mosser Construction with keeping the project ahead of schedule.

Please be sure to check back on the 19th, in case the opening is delayed (you know, hurricane, blizzard, premature end of the world).

I wouldn't put it past NOACA, Clough, Sutherland and our other "friends" to the east to seek a TRO to block it. What a wonderful example of regional thinking they displayed in blocking it for years!

But that, as they say, is now in the rear-view mirror. Kudos to Mayor Jim Smith and the Avon council for getting it done, our neighbors' intransigence be damned!

Perhaps Jim, they should be invited to the party. It could be a little of a "we did it despite" moment. And kudos to you for using "intransigence." Readers, may I suggest dictionary.com?

Where I just moved from is the area that led the nation in job growth last month. It looks to me like there is the potential for this Avon interstate area to go really big in the coming years. I don't know the history of the area and why this would have been blocked, but I sure do hope the wheels of the NE Ohio economy get spinning again.

As a Willow Creek resident I hope that the growth in that area is controlled a little Remember that there is a home development with 180 homes right down the road. Maybe Smith can get his Cleveland Clinic choppers to do a fly by because it sure feels like they are constantly around my house 24/7.

NOT looking forward to the extra traffic...Detroit Road is already a nightmare....will it increase property values?
