Joseph G. Destro Sr., Avon's "Joe the Tailor"

Wake is Wednesday, Oct. 17.

 

Joseph G. Destro Sr., 84, of Avon, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2012 at Mercy Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born Aug. 5, 1928 in Cleveland.

He had lived in Avon for more than 50 years after moving from Avon Lake. He was well-known as "Joe the Tailor," and was the owner and operator of Avon Cleaners and Joe's Menswear for many years.

Joseph served in the US Navy, was a member of the Moose Lodge in Lorain, and was a member of the Italian American Club.

He is survived by children Sheri (Pat) Dente, Linda Conner and Joseph Destro Jr.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and one sister, Rosie Bruhn.  

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Joseph; two brothers, Sal and Donald; four sisters, Carrie, Josie, Angie and Betsy; and his parents, Sam and Veronica (nee Cammarata) Destro.

The family will receive friends at a memorial wake on Wednesday, Oct. 17 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the Misencik Funeral Home, 36363 Detroit Road, Avon. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 10501 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH.

I remember going to visit Joe when I was a kid with my parents. He even tailored my prom dress. What a wonderful man, my deepest condolences to his family.
