Memorial Day Parade, Ceremonies Set for Monday

Parade starts at 9, ceremonies follow

Avon’s annual Memorial Day parade kicks off at 9 a.m. on Detroit Road in front of the Avon Senior Center and will continue east on Detroit to the Avon Cemetery on Detroit and SR 83.

The day’s events, sponsored by the David F. Schneider VFW Post 7035, will include approximately 20 units in the parade, Maura Andrews, the president of the Post’s Women’s Auxiliary, said. Units should begin lining up between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

“The Irish heritage pipe band will start and then the Avon Marching Band will perform,” Andrews said.

For the first time, past and present veterans will be asked to stand for acknowledgement.

A ceremony will be held at the veterans memorial at the cemetery where veteran pastor Paul Hendricks will give the opening prayer followed by comments by Mayor Jim Smith.

The Post will then hold it’s own brief ceremony and two Avon High School students will play taps.

“This is also community appreciation week, so we’ll be handing out checks to the police department, fire department and Girl and Boy Scouts,” Andrews said.

The Avon VFW will also repeat the ceremony at Resthaven Memory Gardens and St. Mary’s Cemetery where David F. Schneider is buried.

How do local businesses get involved with being a participant in future parades?
Thanks,
John
