The city may appropriate $125,000 towards getting started on fixing the light poles at All Pro Freight Stadium.
Law director John Gasior said at Tuesday's work session of Avon City Council getting started as soon as possible is imperative if the light poles are to be repaired by May. That's when the Lake Erie Crushers season opens, and also when the stadium hosts the Mid-American Conference baseball tournament.
"We have to get people working on this, but we can't get them working without contracts," Gasior said. "This is the city stepping up and saying we'll get the ball rolling."
A light pole came crashing down on the picnic plaza at the stadium in December. An inspection revealed three more light poles may have similar problems.
Finance director Bill Logan said with the proposed reappropriations, which will be voted on at next week's council meeting, $50,000 would go towards hiring an engineering firm and $75,000 would be used for hiring general contractor Infinity Construction, which built All Pro Freight Stadium, to handle the project.
If insurance payments come through quickly, Logan said, the city may not need to spend the reappropriated money.
Council went into executive session at the end of the work session to discuss "iminent" litigation surrounding the light poles.
