There's a new business sweetening up the Ernest Building with cookies, cupcakes, pastries and pies, all on the cheap.

The Sweet Shoppe opened on Saturday in a modestly-sized storefront at 33682 Walker Rd., with bright lavender carpet and candy-colored stripes on the wall.

"It reminds me of sugar and candies and sweet things," said owner Gayle Kovach of Sheffield Lake.

And you'll find exactly that - cookies, snow balls, oreos dipped in fudge and hand decorated, gourmet cucpackes, regular cupcakes, whole pecan pie - the store even offers kids a chance to decorate cupcakes on Thursdays from 4-6 p.m., for just the price of the cupcake.

Kovach, 50, said all of the recipes - individual baked goods range in price from 50 cents to $1.85 - are either her's or her family's.

"Some of them are so old that the paper is worn down," Kovach said. "So we covered them with plastic and put them in a book, so we could flip through and not tear them up."

Kovach, who learned to bake from her mother and grandmother, has enlisted the help of her daughter, Tiffany Black, 35.

"We've been baking in here all morning like crazy," Black said Saturday.

And it was Kovach's family who first made her realize she had a talent for baking.

"I was always that go-to person where everybody would say 'Hey, can you bake this for so and so,'" she said. "And, of course, you don't get paid for that stuff."

Three months ago, she decided to open The Sweet Shoppe, and on Saturday, she finally unlocked the door with cupcakes for sale, and people were waiting in the parking lot.

"We've been waiting for this all week," first customer Amy Garafolo said as she and her husband Steve walked through the door.

Kovach may be a rookie in the professional baking circuit, but she is no stranger to the business world.

In 1994, she owned Clean Sweep, a cleaning company in Sheffield Lake, and Great Lakes Driving School in Avon Lake.

At The Sweet Shoppe, Kovach still has to consider traffic, but in a different way.

"The traffic here is great, and of course who wouldn't want the traffic from Lenny's (Deli)?" she said.

The Sweet Shoppe is open Monday and Wednesday-Saturday, from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Its phone number is 440-930-2616.

Hmmmm. Did want to experience the sweets, and took advantage of the "livingsocial" deal they promoted, a couple of $20 of product for $10. Followed all the small print on the living social, and went to the sweet shop on Valentines day thinking it would be a nice treat for the family. Got there exactly at Noon when they open. "Oh, we won't honor the living social on Valentines day, sorry" was the "deal of the day" from them. Nowhere on the voucher, or in the store was there any "we reserve the right to not honor on any specific day" statment. Needless to say thats no way to run a new store. I won't go there if they set the rules and not advise of such. Its a shame.

Thanks for the question Lisa. The hours on our directory listing shows the business is closed on Sundays except for parties.
Here's the directory listing with details: http://avonlake.patch.com/listings/the-sweet-shoppe-e7b5af72
We'll pop on over there tomorrow to see how things are going.

They seem to be closed for good. I wonder if Living Social will refund everyone's money that bought into this place

Is it confirmed that The Sweet Shoppe is closed for good?? I also have a Living Social voucher and have tried calling as well as going to their website, both of which have been disabled. If somoeone could let me know and save me a trip from Rocky River, I'd greatly appreciate it! So glad I found this comment string!

Btw, Living Social will refund your money if a place has gone out of business but in my experience, I've always had to contact them to get the refund (this is the 3rd time I've had a voucher for a place that has closed). They don't proactivly contact you to let you know the place is no longer in business which would be nice.

Its no surprise they are "gone". Anybody that runs a business as they did, is doomed from the start. Did not take long, did it?
Sorry if I sound cold, but it is the customers that run or "derail" a small new place. And they (at least to me) put me off without so much as a "Im sorry" turned me away.
