'Obstruction' Flushed Down Toilet Closes Pool
Water in pool not affected; situation remedied.
“Something” flushed down a toilet at the Avon Lake community pool resulted in a shut down of the aquatic center on June 10, and a cancelation of swim classes the following morning.
Mayor Greg Zilka apologized for the inconvenience at the June 11 council meeting and reported the pool had opened by mid-day on Monday.
“An obstruction flushed down the toilet; they couldn’t correct it,” Zilka said. The obstruction was in the pool sewer line he said.
Recreation Department Gary Gerrone said no one is sure what caused the backup.
“No doubt something slowed the flow through the pool's sanitary discharge,” Gerrone said in an email. “What it was we still can't say. Staff from the Service Department are still looking into it. They did, as of yesterday morning, have things flowing freely again.”
Gerrone said at no time did the blockage affect the water in the pool.
He said the backup was limited to the SprayGround pump house, which is located about six feet below ground level.
