Plain Dealer, Beacon Journal Endorse Barack Obama for President. Do you? POLL
Both newspapers endorsed the president over his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, but with less enthusiasm than they did four years ago. We want to hear what you think.
In this, the so-called swing state of Ohio, two of today's three Ohio major newspaper endorsements went to President Barack Obama.
In the Plain Dealer's endorsement, the editorial board said Ohio benefitted from Obama's decision to help the auto industry and that he pulled the nation back from "the brink of" depression. But they weren't as enthusiastic as they were four years ago.
The Beacon Journal in Akron also endorsed Obama today. They like the president's "direction, spirit and priorities," but also said "errors have been made."
The Columbus Dispatch endorsed his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney today. They said the country needs a new direction and that the president is unsuited to a second term.
But at Patch, it's all about what you think. Here's your chance to publish your "endorsement."
Post it in the comments of this story or we invite you to post your endorsement in a blog. We know you're not shy. And all of your endorsement blogs will be collected and featured on Patch next Sunday.
Not sure how to start a Patch blog? Just go to your home Patch site and click on the "start a blog" link under the editor's top four stories of the day (on the mid left side of the page).
Remember, a blog doesn't have to be War and Peace. Some of our comments are already meaty enough to live in their own blogs.

What does he stand for? It's certainly not a strong U.S. economy... It's not honesty... He's specifically lied about Romney on the auto bailout... Romney never said he would liquidate the auto industry, or not allow the government to step in if needed... Or how about this Benghazi, Libya disgrace? The White House knew within two hours what was going on there, and tried to deceive the American people for 15 days... All to prevent political fallout... That's just despicable... I couldn't vote for Obama after that, even if we did have a booming economy, which we do not... Please look at the last four years, people... Please look at the price of gas... The price of everything... We cannot go down this road for another four years...

Lisa V I have to agree with you. I am sorry I just could not vote for Romney to each is own. I have to vote for what works for me and my family and I do not get government assistance but I do know retired and disable people who rely on that income and they should they worked for it. When I reach retirement age I want mine. It comes out of my paycheck every two weeks and I don't want someone acting as if I am smooching off of something that I worked hard for. I should not be paying more taxes than someone who makes more money than I do. I do not need anyone telling what I can and can not do to my body. Of course Obama has made some mistakes that is what humans do. You learn and grow from mistakes that is what shapes us. You can never please everyone people are always looking for fault instead of the good.

To pv: If you study countries which are socialist democracies, i.e., Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, etc., you will find that they pay taxes but they get something for the taxes they pay: government guaranteed daycare, retirement income, retirement housing and healthcare. They are not dependent on the whim of corporations which can change benefits or even go under totally. Hopefully, you will always be healthy and able to afford your own expensive health insurance, you will not be at the whim of the stock market and lose your retirement or have Republicans give you a voucher to find "affordable" health care when you are older, disabled, or have too many health issues, and you will pay off your home by the time you are elderly and on a fixed income. May no disaster will befall you ever that you might need food stamps or help with daycare costs. Stay healthy and wealthy and don't expect any help from the government you elect if you ever need it for all the taxes you are paying.

Tom Om, you are so mis-informed. Ford had a vested interest that the other auto makers received a bailout. Ford feared that with the total collapse of these auto makers that Ford's suppliers would also go under. For pushed for the auto bailout even though they didn't take any money from that program. However, Ford did take later a $5.9 Billion loan from the government and not from private banks.
Also, when Mitt Romney stated to let the auto manufacturers go into bankruptcy, he meant to let them close completely. There were no banks at the time that would have covered them so they could re-organize to get out of bankruptcy. Without the gov't bailout, the auto manufacturers had no financial backing to re-organize their companies and stay in business.

Ruth - you missed the point entirely. There are bankruptcy laws that will permit companys to discharge their debts while staying in business. Those laws protect the people that have loaned money to the company. Obama screwed everybody with his takeover. Just because a company goes through bankruptcy does NOT mean that they will be dismantled! By the way, your son-in-law was lucky that he was able to keep his dealership - MANY GM dealerships were forced to close by Obama's car czar. How do you think they feel now?

Colter95
7:30 pm on Thursday, October 25, 2012
President Bush started the TARP payments to the auto industry, not Obama. Obama continued them and added to them, but so would have any president, including Romney. The truth in what Romney said is that the auto industry needed to go through bankruptcy reorganization before more money was simply thrown at the problem. It turns out that he was right on the money, and the auto industry went through bankruptcy reorganization, and came out of it in a lot better situation. Now, here is where Obama lies. Romney also said the auto industry loans should come from the private sector, and not the federal government. And ideally, that's what should happen. However, the banking industry was having it's own issues, so the auto industry couldn't go that route. Therefore, the federal government stepped in with the loans they needed. Romney never said he would liquidate the auto industry, per the common Obama campaign claim, or deny federal government funds had he been president. It's an absolutely false claim, and defies common sense since Romney is a son of Detroit, and the son of a former auto executive. He would have never allowed that to happen, so don't let the Obama campaign lies sway the way you vote. The proven liar in this campaign is Obama, who was shown to be completely dishonest on Benghazi, Libya when those emails were leaked.

It was not the Bush clan who created and accepted all the cash from "Fannie and Fredie" . Do some research before you post. It was Barney Franks and Christopher Dodd. Only then did "Wallstreet" sell these assets on open market. Have any of you refinanced a home loan and saw your payment goes to someplace other than the original lender? It was SOLD. That does NOT make it "wallstreets" problem. It makes it originators woe. So, this whole blame Bush nonsense for past 4 yrs is insanity. Nice to see Nurses for Obama. The Cleveland Clinic's CEO believes in Obamacare and so does Massachusetts. It is a system of private insurers offering plans to uninsured residents who pay reasonable premiums based on their incomes and have the finest medical care in the world. "I think that the responsibility that the Democrats had may rest more in resisting any efforts by Republicans in Congress or by me when I was President to put some standards and tighten up a little on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac."
And Congressman Artur Davis (D-AL) September 30, 2008:
"Like a lot of my Democratic colleagues I was to slow to appreciate the recklessness of Fannie and Freddie. I defended their efforts to encourage affordable homeownership when in retrospect I should have heeded concerns by their regulator in 2004. Frankly, I wish my Democratic colleagues would admit when it comes to Fannie and Freddie, we were wrong."

Reply to Red who calls people names like "Nursie" (I'm not a nurse but have an M.B.A. with a specialization in research). You indicate you speak for all doctors and nurses at your hospital which is doubtful. Where do you work? Romneycare (template for Obamacare) has been in effect since 2006 in Massachusetts. Massachusetts General just received the #1 hospital ranking in the country and hasn't been brought down and neither have the other top notch institutions there. 65% of residents are still on their employers' health insurance plans (you mean they didn't lose their health insurance?), 16.4% on Medicare, and 16.6% (the uninsured) have selected private health insurance plans offered by the state through Romneycare. Note Medicaid is gone. Instead these funds reduce the insurance premiums of the uninsured based on their income.

Your comment is so il-informed, it isn't funny. Before bankruptcy, GM was bloated with excess dealerships. The bankruptcy forced GM to clean up their dealer network, and yes, dealerships were closed. How many dealerships would have been closed if Obama didn't intervene??? How about all of them?
Also, this China stuff is crazy. China is the number one car market in the world, and ALL carmakers are doing what they can to get market share in that country. GM is making money in China, and it helps their bottom line. Why don't you anti-auto-bailout people comment on how many jobs GM created in this country since bankruptcy? Again, I recently read they are opening a new high-tech IT center in Austin, Texas and are hiring 700 people...another positive report.

Do you really think that only he rich can help bring class size down to under 20 students. Really? Are you that ignorant? In order to pay for more teachers you will need a working middle class. Not one sponging on the government. The wealthy are the ones who will provide those jobs. Where does Obama plan on making more jobs? (Crickets Chirping) Answer, he doesn't. Romney has the experience to fix it. Quite honestly, I don't care who gets rich as long as the economy gets fixed. soldiermom surely needs Obamacere for psychiatric help. First of all, if Obamacare was socialized medicine, it wouldn't have been put into the hands of private insurance.
Internet purchases should legally be taxed according to the state where the product is delivered to. That is why reputable online sellers like Amazon charge a sales tax according to the buyer's address. There is a loophole in the law that many online sellers use to not charge the appropriate state sales tax. Even Bush talked about closing this loophole as states are missing out on millions of dollars of sales taxes.

Obamacare aka Romneycare in Massachusetts is a system of private insurers offering plans to the uninsured. The uninsured pay reasonable premiums based on their income. Instead of your taxes paying hospitals for surgeries, cancer treatments, emergency room visits, etc., for the uninsured, insurance companies pay and monitor costs as they normally do. Subsidizing health care premiums is more cost effective than Medicaid and reduces your tax burden. Hope misfortune never comes your way and you are always personally responsible for your health care and can pay for exorbitant insurance premiums if you lose your job or ability to work under Romney.

A very strong majority of small to mid-size business owners are for Romney and are scared to death of Obama being re-elected due to the additional taxes and regulations that will add to costs, take away profit and, in the long run, cost us jobs!! Don't believe it?? Ask the owner of any local small to mid-size business to confirm....

I knew college grads there who while looking for jobs were able to obtain insurance from a choice of multiple private plans. Their premium was based on their income so they could afford it. John McMillan & others who put forth this false outrage that conservatives are divisive: I wonder if you read Twitter. Obama supporters are wishing Paul Ryan's 10 yr old daughter raped, the White House burned to the ground should Romney win, etc. There's more spewing of vile remarks by the left. No civil discourse there.
Obama had no voting record; just voted present. He allowed Pelosi & Reid to meet behind closed doors to create a healthcare bill that no one read. No bipartisan involvement. Now we find it's robbing Medicare of $800 billion to support it. Who in their right mind would support a bill that is presented as, laughingly, "You have to pass it to find out what is in it."
Imagine if I were to go to Macy's to purchase a ring. I ask the cashier, "Is this a real diamond?" I'm then told, "You must pay $1700 for it, then I'll tell you whether it's cubic zurconia or a diamond." The transparency promised is not there.
The only change is to weaken our stance in the world. Apologizing for our country & planning to spread our wealth around is not the change I prefer.
Curt Fell
5:30 pm on Sunday, October 21, 2012
Carole, your statement about $800 billion being robbed from Medicare renders the rest of your statements as unbelievable. Medicare is not being robbed. This $800 billion is in savings from the provider side of Medicare, not for the recipients. Romney/Ryan have this $800 billion cut also in their plan. It is money that Medicare will no longer have to spend on the providers as the Hospitals. Pharmaceutical companies, etc have already agreed to the price cuts.
You should try to stop regurgitating Fox Snooze....and check out the facts....

Dear Carole, I have personally heard MANY vile remarks made by Repub's when they should have been discussing issues, but had no verified facts to substantiate their arguments. There are extremists on both sides; they do not represent either party as a whole. However, I have never heard so many blatant untruths regurgitated by Repub's as in this campaign. Most of these things are just NOT true, and are designed to manipulate people's vote by fear. Do you hear yourself say these things? Do you really think we will be living in quonset huts and obeying a Muslim master if the President is re-elected? These are things that have been printed, and offered as fact...and not by the left. The country is CERTAINLY divided right now, because times are hard, and people are looking to place BLAME rather than SOLVE problems. Just PLEASE stop repeating ridiculous things that you have heard from biased sources, without investigating on your own. This is not a good way to develop opinions.

@Curt Fell....the actual $716 billion that the Affordable Health Care Act will be taking from Medicare is in the form of cutting fee for service funds to Hospitals, Doctors and Nursing homes. Which will result in (as these entities have stated) refusal of service to Medicare recipients...thus the elderly will be deprived directly by an indirect cut to their services. Hope you arent on Medicare, friend.
Curt Fell
12:47 pm on Monday, October 22, 2012
@ Phyllis Stager - again, the $716 billion is not a cut but a savings on the provider side that the providers have already agreed upon. There will be no reduction in benefits or denial of service. This is an old T-Party theme that has been outed as a lie.
Also, the Romney-Ryan plan also has the SAME $716 billion in cuts in their plan!!!!
If you want to blame someone for this, then blame goes to both parties...but there really is no blame to go about for this...

@Curt Fell...read this column by Bob Graham, democratic senator from Florida:
http://www.tampabay.com/opinion/columns/the-truth-about-those-medicare-cuts/1257731
It lists the cuts to providers...providers have already said they will be forced to take NO Medicare patients as a result of that. Read the whole thing. Medicare patients are going to be shafted. They will retain the same benefits, but no one will provide them...
Also, you don't automatically get prescription drug coverage with Medicare, you have to sign up to pay more for that coverage added to what you already pay Medicare and your 'supplement'. What you pay for Medicare once you are on it is about the same as private insurance is for an individual paying out of pocket. It is a fair deal now, but when providers turn you down...you will be in a fix.

We went into a recession at the end of 2007, but that was just the beginning...the government ALWAYS spends more than it takes in during a recession because revenues are down and unemployment claims are up and more people need Medicaid and food stamps. President Obama is displaying true "Christian" values with regard to helping Americans during the recession which President Bush and his team created. With Obamacare, he is trying to provide those who are poor or not insured the opportunity to purchase health insurance from an assortment of private health insurance plans (with an income based sliding scale for premiums). Medicaid funds go toward these premiums. He is making sure those who are out of work or in need have food stamps (and a recession would up this number). Instead of having to still finance and pay for ill-advised wars created under Republicans, your taxes help your fellow Americans, and who's to say you might be one of them one day. I'm voting for Mitt Romney, because I want to restore Religious Freedom to this country. The HHS mandate is a complete lack of respect for our religious beliefs and needs to be over turned. John McMillan - while in Congress he voted (twice I believe) AGAINST the "Born Alive Act". This act would allow any baby born alive (when the intention was an abortion) to be allowed to live. The baby was born, alive, and our President voted in favor of allowing this baby to be killed via neglect. That is the definition of infanticide. If you really are looking at the President's record, you will see he is consistently voting AGAINST the protection an innocent baby. That is pretty "Pro-Death" to me.

@Curt Fell It is typical liberal to demean, call names & deny---3 well known tactics. I will not respond to that. Here is a link concerning Anne Patterson, who, works for the present WH.
EQUIPPED IS THE KEY WORD HERE. Original reports were that our Marines charged with guarding the embassy WERE NOT EQUIPPED. Reportedly Ambassador to Egypt Anne Patterson “did not permit U.S. Marine guards to carry live ammunition,” according to multiple reports on U.S. Marine Corps blogs spotted by Nightwatch. “She neutralized any U.S. military capability that was dedicated to preserve her life and protect the US Embassy.”
As you already know, on the 11th anniversary of 9/11, Islamic radicals breached the walls of the US Embassy in Egypt, tore down our flag, destroyed it and replaced it with some black thing of their own. As the story has progressed, it truly disgusted me to read this article – http://freebeacon.com/reports-marines-not-permitted-live-ammo/.
Is it a stupid question to ask how in God’s name is it possible for the Marines to protect the lives of others, (not to mention their own) if THEY’RE BASICALLY UNARMED? I think not.
If they’re unarmed, what are they even there for, window dressing?

@helen is a typical conservative blaming people for something that isn't there. Where did I call someone a name? All I stated was to not post any drivel without checking the facts. If you call that demeaning, well then that is really your problem.
The Free Beacon you listed points out exactly the statement I made "The U.S. ambassador to any nation ultimately decides whether Marines are authorized to carry ammunition, according to a GOP national security adviser knowledgeable about American embassy protocols." Ambassador Patterson may or may have not permitted the Marines to be equipped with live ammunition that day. It is the Ambassador's decision and not the Presidents, just as I have stated.
Also, there is an update at the end of the Jan Morgan link that states"
"Further Marine spokesman at Pentagon Lt Col Chris Hughes says these reports are NOT true. This is on the record:
"The Ambassador and RSO have been completely and appropriately engaged with the security situation. No restrictions on weapons or weapons status have been imposed. This information comes from the Det Commander at AMEMB Cairo.”
So, in fact, you are backing up my statement to helen about her saying "Who has ever heard of Marines being unarmed in a foreign land---yes, since 2008." She tried to blame the President.

If it isn't a government program how is it that the IRS just hired 16,000 tax agents to keep track of the mandate penalty taxes for those who don’t comply? You will have to buy government insurance because you won’t be able to afford private insurance. Your doctor won’t accept government insurance if he is even still in practice. And as far as internet taxes go I am talking about Obama working with the UN to approve the UN taxing American citizens. I am not taking about sales taxes. @Anita...Here is a point by point comparison of Romney's tax plan and Obama's tax plan. That is a more rational way of assessing 'what is to come'. Instead of ranting about one or the other...look at them both.

Typical of most of the media behind Obama. We definately need change. These last 4 years have been bad due to jobs and housing. Romney has done well as a govenor and helping the Olympics get out of fiscal disaster. I like Paul Ryan. He is smart and has the facts down. He will do very well as a VP.

I am reading all kinds of things on this page and half are not true regarding Obama or Romney. I have never ever seen such a divide between Americans. Until we stop fighting between each other it won't matter who wins this election. The government is in shambles and I don't see either of them making a difference. I don't know what the answer is but I am certain that it is not Romney or Obama. It is our Congress and Senate that needs to listen to the people and not there party.

I received the email announcing the Plain Dealer and Beacon Journal endorsements of President Obama at 12:19 PM today while I was out canvassing for the re-election of President Obama and Sen. Sherrod Brown. Needless to say, I support both, because, unlike Romney and Mandel, they have worked for the middle class, minorities, and women and to try to raise the fortunes of the entire nation...not just the top few percent that Romney and Mandel favor. Those latter two also would bring back the same policies that brought us to the brink of a second great depression.
It didn't escape my notice that the first post came at 12:27, 11 minutes after Patch posted the article at 12:16, the first nattering nabob of negativity posted at 12:30, and the trollway was officially opened with a post at 12:40, and it was off and running. It's a shame that these forums have become such a swamp of negativity. Is it any wonder that Congress is broken? These are the people who elect the extremists who won't engage in the fine art of politics...compromise. The worst of these are on the conservative side of the aisle, and you don't have to take my word for it. Read "It's Even Worse Than It Looks" by conservative American Enterprise thinker Norman Ornstein and Thomas Mann of the Brookings Institution.
A vote for Romney or Mandel is a vote for the complete corporate takeover of America. No thanks.

January 15, 2013, the national debt will be over $16,400,000,000,000. No matter who is elected, by 2016, the debt will be over $20,000,000,000,000. With Obama in a second "RULE", the debt will easily be over $23,000,000,000,000.

Up until a few weeks ago, Obama was eating Romney’s lunch and pretty much had his second term of “RULE” in the bag. Then the Obama administration completely dropped the ball by insulting the American Public (and electorate) with their attempt to cover up the September 11th Terrorist Attack on our Libyan Consulate.
Obama again insulted America during the second Presidential debate when he claimed that on September 12th in a Rose Garden address, he specifically stated “that this was an act of terror”. Once again straying from his repeated claims (before and after the debate) that the attack was a random riot due to the YouTube video. EXTREMELY POOR JUDGEMENT by the Obama campaign.
It is very unfortunate that American heroes are slaughtered then used as pawns by our elected, thug, hack politicians. Our once Great Nation is now in a very precarious position. Many Independents, Democrats and Republicans alike are becoming more disgusted with the way our government is “Transforming”.
Two weeks from tomorrow, America will give Mitt Romney the chance to get our nation back on track. America will have a Commander In Chief that celebrates success of the individual while standing fast to maintain Global, Military Superiority as protecting American Citizens is Job One.
God Bless Our Military and God Bless America!

That the Beacon and the Plain Dealer endorsed Obama is no surprise to anyone. Any sane person who has ever read any of their editorials would know that they are so far to the left, and have sipped the Liberal "Kool-Aid" of socialism, that their vote for Osama was already in the bag before the GOP even selected Romney.
Although Romney is not a Conservative in the classical sense, he is a man who has actually built businesses and payed payrolls to employees. Although not a "community organizer" who has lived all over the world as a child, or one who has listened at the lap of Socialists and Communists, Romney has the drive and ability to turn around a government that has over-regulated small businesses and refused to allow the economy to recover as they determined who they would funnel our tax dollars to (Solyndra and others who served as contributers and bundlers). As Romney said, Obama didn't pick winners-and-losers, they just picked losers.

The thing that leaps out at me when I hear of how Romney will fix all that is wrong with our economy is this: He made 22 million last year, all of which is from investments. How do the corporations that he invested in make profits and pay dividends plus make their stock prices higher ? They lower costs. And we all understand that shipping jobs to the Pacific rim countries is is most popular way for American companies to lower their cost. So, this being said, isn't it fair to say that rich guys including Romney made their money last year by investing in companies that shipped our jobs offshore ? Doesn't that fly in the face of "I'll stand up to China?"

The problem is the Dems won't let the dollars come back into this country. Punitive tax policy makes it favorable to keep earned profit overseas. The Dems would rather cut off their noses to spite their faces. In addition, the Keynesian multiplier does not work and it is impossible to spend our way out of debt and recession. FDR spent 12 years keeping us in a depressed state with regressive tax policy and protectionist measures. Not until we sent most of our work force overseas to fight did we start to come out of it.
We are a free society so no government or person should have a say in what another does with his or her money or they business they run! Change tax policy to benefit business and it will stay in the US.
Murphy-Solon

Companies have moved overseas to take advantage of a cheaper labor force (low wages / no health care). Tax policy was not the incentive. Corporations that stash their profits overseas are anti - American. It takes taxes to pay for infrastructure and services and the fact that corporate America refuses to do it's part is rather shameful.

"Corporate America is not the problem". I thoroughly disagree. All major corporations must bow to the shareholders, which require profits using any means necessary. Do you deny that's how Mitt made his money last year ? His investments made money for him. Not automatically a bad thing in and of itself. Now, Mitt didn't personally participate in sending those jobs to China. But he certainly did reap great rewards from it. Doesn't that make him part of the problem ? Record profits by many US corporations were made by shipping American production overseas. To deny this as the major reason why US business is in such trouble is to deny understanding of the root problem itself.

General Electric hires a great number of Americans. I would like to see what would happen if they decided to cut back 10%. We can always find individual examples as we are a free nation and free nations will always have issues on both sides. But the great number of businesses are good and responsible for keeping jobs here.
Talk to those of us who run small and middle-market businesses in Ohio and I guarantee you have a much different story than what you think is the true cause and effect.

"I would like to see what would happen if they decided to cut back 10%" Please refer to cutbacks by GE Capital (the largest division of GE). Far more than 10%. The American people, like my father, fought the wars that have allowed corporate America a free market in which to flourish. The American people built the roads and bridges, subsidized the state universities that offered corporations qualified labor pools. There was a time when you knew if the corporations were doing good the workers were doing good and vice versa. That is no longer the case. American corporations, despite this horrible tax policy you refer to, have been posting record profits over the past few years while worker wages have remained stagnant. I don't think corporations are evil, but, I do think their short term planning to maximize profit will create a long term economic problem for this country. 73% of our GDP is consumption, continue to dis the American worker and corporate America will have bigger problems than tax policy in the long term.

It is really scary and a sad to hear a politician change his position like Romney.. just to get the votes.. all of a sudden he is for women and women's rights.. give me a break! If he is elected women will be more oppressed with less opportunities than ever.. Most people who are against Obama have no idea that Obamacare has already save thousands of lives and will force Insurance companies to use 85% of their money to spend on actual medical care instead of corporate profits.. finally real and effective insurance for real people.. Romney and Ryan will grow insurance profits and put you on a high deductable where you will go broke paying ALL the medical costs yourself ... trust that! Read the details... before you buy into and believe all the political rhetoric just because it sounds good to you and all the sound bytes they use just to sway your thinking... there really is a lot at stake. Does all the Obama haters remember that a Republican is the one who got us in this mess in the first place. Romney wants to get rid of Medicare for seniors and children with disabilities like my son who rely on medicare to get all his therapies he needs and Romney wants to get rid of Planned Parenthood so our teens who can't afford contraceptives will not be able to get them. All us hard working people will not be able to get our SSI when we retire cause there won't be SSI in 2yrs thanks to Romney if he is elected. Also why should us middle class and lower class people have to pay more taxes when we can barely make ends meat most of the time and all the rich like Romney don't have to pay a dime. This is truly an election with two very different points of view. The current President clearly believes that the government is able to solve all of the problems in this country by throwing money at them. He might not be a "socialist", but he clearly is a statist. The challenger clearly believes that the government should stay out of the way and let the economy grow by lowering taxes. The largest peace time expansion in the history of this country happened when Ronald Reagan got congress to lower taxes.....Hmmmmm. This country was BUILT by entrepreneurs that took chances. I wonder how much money Henry Ford, Andrew Carnegie, John D Rockefeller and all of the titans of industry got form the government when they built their empires. I would guess...NONE. The government needs to get out of our lives and let the private sector create jobs and wealth. Is it a coincidence that since the federal government has gotten their hands into education that our world ranking has fallen....I think not. I believe that Romney offers this country the best chance to become prosperous again. The Obama plan is leading us to the disaster facing Europe and Greece in particular.....just my thoughts.

A guy who moved here from England was quoted as saying, "In England, if they see someone driving an expensive car, they ask why does that guy have the right to drive it? Who is he? In America they say, 'I want to get me one of those."
That is the essence of what America is about. That individuals have the opportunity to accomplish whatever they want. That is why people come here in droves. The right of the individual to achieve his dreams is uniquely American.
I have extrapolated/quoted this from a column:

Thank you for that Richard, that was a thoughtful mature contribution. I disagree with you on a couple of points though. I'm a political junkie and have never heard the President express a belief that the government can solve all of the country's problems. The Republicans are trying to define him that way. Second, the largest peace time expansion of our economy happened during the Clinton Administration with the creation of 20 million jobs. This happened at a time when the top tax bracket was 39%.
Richard Krumreig
11:55 am on Monday, October 22, 2012
It might be a fact that Clinton had a larger expansion than Reagan...However, Clinton was not bringing the country out of the malaise created when Carter was in office. I have never heard Obama claim that he can solve all of the problems, however his insistence that spending more money will solve the problems is flawed. I believe candidate Obama called the Bush deficits "unpatriotic".... I find that interesting since every deficit in his administration far outpaces the Bush deficits. As a candidate he also claimed that he would halve the deficit in three years or he would be a one termer....He increased it by 50%. So as a candidate he either did not know what he was talking about or he just said what he needed to say to get elected....I know they all do that, but I believe it is time for a change. Lower tax rates and potentially less government regulation can't hurt since the economy is clearly in the toilet and not making any headway.

This is what I discovered when I searched Barack Obama's involvement in the mortgage lending in Chicago: a class-action lawsuit filed in 1995 by Barack Obama on behalf of three lead plaintiffs and 180 subsidiary plaintiffs against Citibank for alleged discrimination in lending practices. It lead to a settlement in 1998 in which Citibank agreed to increase sub-prime lending to African-American borrowers. How did that work out for Obama’s clients? Not particularly well:
President Barack Obama was a pioneering contributor to the national subprime real estate bubble, and roughly half of the 186 African-American clients in his landmark 1995 mortgage discrimination lawsuit against Citibank have since gone bankrupt or received foreclosure notices.
As few as 19 of those 186 clients still own homes with clean credit ratings, following a decade in which Obama and other progressives pushed banks to provide mortgages to poor African Americans.
Not what you expect from an advocate for a better life (Hope?)

I love how whenever a newspaper endorses a Democrat, all you righties scream "Well, of course, they are obviously left-leaning!" I just did some research, and since Lyndon Johnson in 1964, the PD has only endorsed two other Democrats for president: Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Your minds must short-circuit when the PD endorsed all of those Republicans throughout the years.

I also did some research. You are completely correct. However, given the candidates that the Democrats offered in each of those elections where a Republican was elected the PD really had no choice. To say they were a sad bunch is an understatement. If you read what they wrote when they endorsed Clinton the first time you could just plug in the name Obama instead of Bush. It just occurred to me; With all the noise the media is making about
Romney's wealth, I don't recall such bluster and hand-wringing over
the Kennedy fortune. Or, for that matter, John Kerry. Or the fact that
John Kerry gave virtually nothing to charity while Romney gave almost
$4 million, in addition to his entire inheritance from his father.
Biden gave less than 1.5% of his income to charity. And Obama pays a
lower tax rate than his secretary. Buffett Rule?
Oh. Wait. I just remembered. Romney is Republican.
Kerry and the Kennedys are Democrats.
Also, Romney worked for his money.
Kennedy inherited his.
And Kerry married his.

I find it interesting that the President has been hammering Mr Romney on his lack of foreign policy experience. A scant 4 years ago Mr Obama had NO foreign policy experience so he picked Joe Biden to be his running mate because he allegedly had so much foreign policy experience while in the Senate. Not sure the current foreign policy is working. Just as in our personal live we are not going to be friends with everyone....there are countries that we will never be friends with. Mr Obama seems to want to be friends with everyone. He seems to be somewhat put off by Israel and more enamored with the Arab world....Anyway....what President has ever been elected, except maybe George H W Bush, that had any serious foreign policy experience? Romney looked presidential?? He asserted that Syria is critical because it is Iran's path to the sea. Problem is that Syria doesn't share a border with Iran, and Iran already has two seacoasts, north and south. I really would prefer a president who possesses a basic knowledge of middle east geography instead of parroting phrases fed to him by his coaches, since he is too inexperienced to articulate an intelligent foreign policy. Furthermore, President Obama was far from being a thug; he was simply addressing Romney's ineptitude and inconsistency clearly and directly.

Interesting post from nr online:
Democratic Despair in Ohio
By Roger Beckett
October 25, 2012 5:04 P.M.
Today’s Canton Repository runs an article titled, “Lower black turnout could mean loss for Obama,” that has some remarkebly candid comments about the lack of enthusiasm for Obama:
“Just talking to people, I’m just not feeling it,” said Stark Democratic Vice Chairman Deametrious St. John, the Ohio Democratic Party’s former director of African-American outreach.
“In 2008, everybody cared. Everybody was interested. It was exciting. Now, people aren’t excited,” said St. John, adding that many black residents are unemployed or have had their pay cut. “They think, ‘It don’t affect me, so why should I vote?’ ”
Since the first debate, enthusiasm for Romney is growing in Ohio. Commentators seem to suggest that Obama won the second and third debates, and those debates may have slightly slowed Romney’s surge. But Romney surge in Ohio continues. Perhaps more importantly, Obama has lost the enthusiasm he had in 2008. This article shows us that he has lost it even among his base.

I'm well familiar with "Don't Mess With Texas". I think it started around 1986 or so when I was living in D/FW area. Now, i live in a Houston suburb.
Yes, we are the USA. However, there are too many Texans that believe that we should not belong to the USA. If I had a nickel for every pickup that I've seen with a "SECEDE" bumper sticker on it, I'd be part of the 1%....LOL!!! Those types are 'All Hat and no Cattle"...LOL!

@Curt...so you are a transplanted buckeye, also! As to the 'secede' Texans, it is really a 'states rights' sentiment. All the Texans I know are extremely patriotic and love this nation dearly. No greater WWII hero than Audie Murphy (who grew up not far from where I now live). The history of Texas is unique...the spirit of those who fought at the Alamo and San Jacinto...seems to be run in the veins of today's Texans.
Its Texans who have formed volunteer groups at the DFW to meet home coming soldiers returning from our current military actions. There are more homes with USA flags out front than anywhere else in the USA. Its truly a unique experience living here. Regardless of what the administration says, Texas will keep those UN observers 100 feet from the voting booths! All they have to say is 'Remember the Alamo'. LOL!
I go to the mechanic to get my oil changed. A group of locals sits around in the 'office/waiting' room. I get regaled with countryfied tales of the history of the characters of this town by natural born raconteurs. Its like nothing I have experienced anywhere else. Texans are a lot smarter than you think! LOL!

Murphy-Solon
11:56 am on Friday, November 16, 2012
MZ, I personally don't hate the Tea Party. I believe that in difficult times like these we need to thread the needle. Now is not the time for either an extreme right or left to prevail. We need to cut spending but not so quick as to stall a recovery. We need to cut spending in a strategic way w/o regards to special interest campaign contributions. The 87 freshman Tea Party folks swept into office in 2010 created a bit of a problem. They had the political momentum to stop Speaker Boehner from cutting a grand bargain with the President during the debt ceiling negotiations. In so doing, they actually created the fiscal cliff. Because of that political momentum, Boehner and the Republican establishment felt they had no choice but to bite their collective lips and tolerate the Tea Party swagger. But, as a result of the recent election setback, I argue that the established Republicans toleration for the Tea Party excesses has all but disappeared. The Tea Party received a mandate from a small slice of America and I believe time will prove that mandate unsustainable. Boehner and the Republican establishment need to control the Tea Party so that compromise can be reached with the Democrats. If the recent election taught us one thing it is that the country has lost it's patience with the Tea Party. I don't hate them but I'm adamant in saying to you MZ that cooler heads must prevail.

Debbie-
Your first article is a perfect illustration of how handouts have gotten way out of hand. Not only do the poor receive money, but now we have a form of welfare in our tax program where those with children can get tax credits up to $3000 and earned income credit of up to $5900. We also allow tuition deduction. And, for these families to receive these handouts just for having kids, that means those without pick up the tab. Its time to give money to those deserving - the poor, medically needy, temporarily unemployed. Not just because they have families. That was their choice and the rest of us should not have to pay again for someone elses. And, these tax credits mean that people get money from the government, a tax refund, even when they owe no taxes - not just reducing their tax balance. If you are going to provide welfare, make it a separate program and make people prove they are really strapped - not just pass money out to them.
And, I want to see Social Security survive and the debt lessened - so forget about that 2% payroll tax reduction (sorry, this is what I corrected - was "deduction"). That IS how SS is funded after all. And, raise the wage limit of those paying in.

Keith, you just don't understand the breadth of the 2008 collapse. It took 11 years and the economic stimulus of WWII to emerge from the depression. Too many Americans expectations of the 2008 collapse was that this was a normal recession with a normal recovery period. Americans seem unwilling to face the consequences of the excessive behavior of our society that led to our problems. Complaining will not make anything better. We have no choice but to accept the slow grind that will be necessary in the coming years.

A world war Phyllis, that was the stimulus. Let's be clear, the largest instance of redistributed wealth in the history of our country was the 2008 fraud. Average Americans absorbed incredible losses of wealth in their home equity and 401k plans while the rich and well connected laughed all the way to the bank. Even today the Fed keeps it's borrowing rate to banks at zero ensuring the fact that my cd's pay squat. Those that lost their jobs as a result of Wall Street greed have experienced hard times. To point to the increased needs of these victims for public assistance as redistribution strikes me as cold hearted.

By the way, all those government programs instituted by FDR (WPA, CCC, etc.) did not take us out of the depression. It was the industry required for War needs. I agree with you about the 2008 fraud. But I am not of the belief that all wealthy are fraudulent and greedy. Its all part of the of the cultural breakdown. I would never wish to deny honest, hard working, responsible individuals the financial assistance they warrant until they find a job, etc. There is a separate genre who do abuse the system. I know them first hand. It was our presidents own words 'its good to spread the wealth around'. We do need to take care of our needy and incapacitated and those incapable of actually working. We should not subsidize those who game the system. In as much I don't place all those on government subsidy as 'moochers', I do not feel that all wealthy investors, businessmen as greedy and dishonest.

Besides those looking for a job who may need temporary help, there's the elderly, disabled or medical needy.
After that, people also need to take some personal responsibility too. They kept buying that bigger house, living paycheck to paycheck, with no guarantees that their home values would go up. For those who remain in their homes and didn't need to refinance, they should not be complaining about making those payments - they signed for them. What difference does it make if the home is 10 times more or less if they are living there - at least their taxes are less. Does anyone remember back in the 80's, I think it was, when rates were so high that people would get 5 year loans with balloon payments at the end? Did we come running to them to act like their parent who had to bailout the irresponsible kid who got in over their head?
And my latest - if you can't afford kids -don't have them. Why should I have to pay more in taxes just so others can get refunds, especially over having no tax due? Why should they get $3000 in child tax credits, or $5900 in earned income tax credits - and these do not just go to the poor. Why should people get to deduct tuition - if you want that education, you pay for it and don't expect to have my taxes be higher to give you that. And quit complaining about Social Security AND high taxes - I want SS to survive, the debt reduced, so forget about that 2% reduction in payroll taxes.
Thats my rant for the day. And not coldhearted.

Phyllis, you failed to address the fact that the 2008 fraud was the largest redistribution of wealth in American history. Also, that segment of our society that game the system will always exist. I defend the newly poor that want to work for a decent wage. They don't deserve to be labeled as demanding wealth redistribution. The Presidents remarks speak to a diminishing middle class. The gap between the top 10% and the bottom 90% is wider than ever before in our history. That bodes badly for our country. The non-union low wage agenda the Republicans have embraced is coming to roost. Instead of forwarding this phony redistribution argument, the Republicans should reflect on the flaws of their past economic policies that created the conditions that they complain about. Republican policies created a shrinking middle class and now they blame the victims of said policies.

So, do you believe that in order to reduce the wealth gap, the wealthy should be responsible for the funds to equalize the standard of living for all citizens? Thus it really shouldn't matter how hard you work, nor how many hours, or how smart you are nor how responsible you are as to taking on debts, etc., all should have equivalent housing, dining, vacations, and so forth?
What do you really visualize? No concern as to profit in order for an enterprise to continue to serve the public with its product and reward the 'owner' or management with only the satisfaction of living in the same neighborhood as the employees, driving the same Honda? Is it the view that the gas station attendant make the same as the gas station owner? The gas station owner worked and saved for 15 years before he came to own the business. The attendant is a married teenager with 2 kids and rather than save is in debt beyond his means to repay. Two different roads yet they both lead to equal compensation and standard of living?
It is a heartfelt idealistic view but it is against the nature of the species and common sense.

What happened in 2008 and the the 10 plus years before, and those all responsible, can be addressed how? I don't care if you tax those wealthy a little more. But when it comes to redistribution of money within members of the middle class, IMO, that is just the wrong solution. We are all in the same boat. Just because my family has towed the line, lived within our means, and assumed responsibility for hardships we have endured even when it didn't seem fair, why should we be expected to bailout others who have chosen to do the opposite?

With all due respect, I don't think you ladies are seeing the whole picture. The largest contributing factor to government assistance are the working poor. Take Walmart, America's largest employer, for example. They stock their shelves with Chinese goods while paying their employees peanuts without benefits. These employees in turn qualify for government assistance. While Walmart posts record profits they dismiss their responsibilities onto the taxpayer. As a result, the working poor don't earn enough to cover the basic necessities that our cost of living demands. What you see as a redistribution of wealth from the taxpayer to the working poor, I see as a redistribution of wealth from the taxpayer to corporate America at a time when corporate America is posting record profits. This is basic mathematics. As more Americans fall from the ranks of the middle class to the ranks of the working poor, more will qualify for government assistance. That ladies is just basic common sense.

I don't think anyone seriously thinks that everyone should make the same money regardless of effort. That is a right wing fallacy put forth for political purposes. It is those that are WORKING and still living in poverty that are getting the raw deal. They deserve better from the companies that barely employ them. EXCELLENT explanation, Murphy!!

Have you reviewed the hourly wages for Walmart employees?
http://www.glassdoor.com/Hourly-Pay/Walmart-Stores-Hourly-Pay-E715.htm
The lowest paid employee makes $17,500 a year. The highest paid makes $20,500.
These are un-skilled as to category, some without even a high school diploma. What would be a fair salary for non skilled workers, sales clerks? Their skilled workers (pharmacy tech, Merchandise supervisor, etc.) are paid more.
What would we do without companies like Walmart to hire these unskilled workers? Are you willing to hire them at starting pay of $15.00-20.00 an hour? Do it.

You have to realistically consider the job and skills required. Do you expect that Walmart or MacDonalds worker to be making the same as say a teacher, accountant, nurse, lawyer, doctor,...where further education is required? I think that where a job involves risks, that can also bump up the pay - working in mines or window washer. Isn't that why we have minimum pay requirements? Walmart is always made out to be the bad guy. But, they pay much better than others in retail. And, I remember reading a few years back that despite what people think, they do make health plans available -even to the part time people. That is why you see more older people working there, for the benefits. Just because employees have to pay into it, doesn't mean that big bad Walmart is the bad guy. What do you think that clerk should be getting? You know how much benefits costs. Should these clerks have fully paid medical benefits and earn $65,000/year?

Hearing Boehner and Cantor continually utter "job creators" makes me wonder....do people really think that rich people create jobs ? Do you see the business owners as benevolent, altruistic souls looking to expand their business for the good of the middle class ? REALLY ? Someone posted earlier....the "job creators" are the middle class CONSUMERS. Big business games the system for the sake of shareholder driven profit ONLY. And small business owners....well, their first priority has to be profit to further the lifestyle of themselves and their family. If we use their products or services, they may grow the business, or they may just continue to escalate their lifestyle. I don't believe in redistribution of wealth, but I do think that regulations should be aligned with reality. To big business: If you take American jobs offshore, you cannot bring that product back here for sale. To small business: Regulations will be tailored appropriately to promote success as long as you grow the company through reinvestment in US jobs. No further outsourcing.

What a hackneyed overworked phrase: "on the backs of the working poor'. That appropriately elicits your heartfelt love for the so called working poor. I think they would resent that. They have enough sense and pride to know they are unskilled and are thankful to have the income. In Walmart, they are mostly women at the check out stands and realize they can move up by demonstrating various needed skills for higher positions and salaries.
I want to see you take on unskilled workers in your business and pay them $20.00 an hour. You can't. I hire help once a week or so for my 'ranch'. I pay between $8.75 to $10.00 an hour. I cannot afford to pay more. Those who work for me usually have full time jobs and are delighted to repair fencing and eliminate cedars, and brush. I train them to feed my horses and donkeys for the odd times I have to go into Dallas to 'babysit' the grandkids. They like the extra funds and a pleasant working environ. Most of these fellows are phenomenal people with real goals, values and families. I have been 'taken' a few times and loaned money for sob stories with the subsequent vanishing act. But that is okay. Most are really fine guys. One guy recently called me collect from jail and asked me for $1300 for bail. I really wish I were wealthy and could have afforded that because the guy in question is basically a good guy.

"The danger to America is not Barack Obama, but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools, such as those who made him their president."

You live in La La land Phyllis. Wages in the country adjusted for inflation have not increased since the early eighties. On the other hand, the cost of living has far exceeded wage increases during that same period. Basic math suggests that in that environment people qualifying for government assistance will grow. You can characterize these people as takers all you want. That might make you feel smart but it won't begin to address the underlying issue. That is, wages are not keeping up with the cost of living.........period.
Phyllis Stager

In 1980 the minimum wage was $3.10 per hour, today, the federal mandate is $7.75 per hour. Gas per gallon in 1980 was $1.00+ per gallon. Now, we are looking at $3.50 to $4.00+ per gallon. With gas price increases we look at the subsequent elevation in food prices. I am no mathematician, but the ratio of the two shows that gas is proportionately higher in comparison to the minimum wage increase...thus that inflation equivalency you state is true.
However, I wonder what it is you are advocating? Higher salaries for the unskilled working poor? Are you at all concerned about the survival of the myriad of businesses which are fighting to survive? If more businesses fail, most assuredly people qualifying for gov assistance will grow.
When have I characterized 'these people' as takers? That is quite out of the blue. There are so many facets to this problem, I think you conveniently overlook the solutions which are being ignored. Instead you prefer to toss those with other 'overviews' as being in la la land. Just what are your solutions? If you want these people back to work, then there had better be places for them TO work AND fuel independence with accompanying reduction in prices. Educating the hell out of everyone will not provide jobs. They can graduate with all the degrees available and wind up if they are lucky working as a sales person in sports shoe store...if it is still in business.

Get over the rich. Maybe quit resolving the issues by blaming the rich. We should be grateful they are there to take the risks they have to invest and build, while we go to our 9-5's. Just like many people made investment (stock market,...) decisions prior to or after based on who they thought would be elected or was elected. My utilities are going up faster than income coming in. So start controlling these. How about each person only have to pay a percentage of their bills based on how their income fluctuates? If they lose their job - they owe nothing. This is extreme, but we all know raises aren't always what we want or need. If the minimum wage is not high enough - talk to Obama. Some people work in retail for extra money for the household, for hour flexibility, for a parttime job, for Christmas money, to get out of the house and work a little,... But, you can't take some of these reasons and get a 9-5 job. If you were to pay retail workers even $40,000 and fully paid benefits, you would slowly see companies disappear because they would not be able to handle these salary costs. As it is, when a company needs to lower costs, the first place they go is salary costs. What you end up doing is potentially reducing a companys work force, leaving more workers without a job, so the company can meet your guidelines. It is all a ripple effect.

You know, Lyn, I don't think the fellow really gives a tinker's dam about the working poor or the unworking poor. I think the dislike for those who have 'more', from the mere 'better off', to the wealthy, is the factor guiding their vitriol. That is a true tragedy as emotions along with their cliches (eg: on the backs of the working poor) dominate their thinking rather than logic. I am not a Republican, I am a conservative libertarian constitutionalist. I don't care which party does what unless it interferes with our freedoms, economy and constitution. Sadly, that is what has been going on for the past four years. There are democrats I have loved and respected. But what prevails now is not the Democratic party I once knew. Actually, one I have been liking is Lindsay Graham because he does agree with the other side at times, when the rest of his party sticks together. I respect someone who does that.
And, I do agree so many people repeat that bleeding heart mantra. Sounds good. But, lets get down to what the really problem is. Get past these sound bites and catchy phrases. If the rich are rich, lucky them. But they are hated for it. Pretty pathetic that success is demonized. From what I understand, unemployment is high. It is in actuality closer to 12% than 8% when you count those who have quit working and part-timers. What is the problem? Not enough jobs. So, rather than tackle a solution for unemployment the left moans about wages not being enough. Right now that is NOT the problem.
Its the unemployed who have lost decent jobs and can't find another who after their unemployment runs out, needs further subsidy. Deservedly so.
How do we reduce unemployment? We provide a pathway for more jobs. How do we do that? Not by penalizing business and industry into scaling back or going out of business.
There is a solution. And its NOT whining about profits being made on the backs of the working poor, that is what we have OSHA for. Demonizing the 'wealthy' and sobbing about the working poor will NOT provide more jobs.

Let's see...... deregulated the trucking industry - thousands of owner/operators out of business, followed by large LTL firms (remember Consolidated, Mason-Dixon, Spector, etc ?) Deregulated the banking industry----well, we know how that went. Deregulated offshore drilling---BP disaster. So, here's just a few cases where big business and the fat cats who run them have been given free reign and they choose to screw the American public in favor of other rich shareholders. How do we reverse unemployment ? By making it HARDER for business to outsource OFFSHORE. Penalize them if they take jobs away, and reward them if they bring them back. But, for the love of Pete, DON'T TRUST them to do it voluntarily. Altruism is not in their corporate values.

Phyllis Stager

The opposite of what, specifically. You sound like our President when asked a question or challenged he doesn't want to deal with.
A group of my friends and I were sitting talking about how the President goes on and on in that regard yet never gives an answer. We decided to see if we could get in that mind set. So we asked each other simple questions. I was asked if I was going to feed my horses tomorrow. I had a ball with this. I was able to rationally respond for 5 minutes all pertaining to the 'subject' and never provided and answer. We tickled that all of us were capable of this inasmuch as we had just never thought in that way before.
So....I ask, the opposite of what? And where are the 'untruths' in what I said?

Well it's kind of like this Phyllis. 73% of our GDP is the result of consumption. Republicans believe in the false assumption that lowering taxes and regulations on business will create jobs. That is simply not true, demand creates jobs. The rise of the middle class in the 50's and 60's propelled our economy upward. Americans had the disposable income to purchase the automobiles, refrigerators and televisions. This economic activity fueled new job creation. When you suggest that we not pay attention to profit distributions w/respect to the currently employed, you fail to realize that a lack of disposable income is the job creation problem. Real wages adjusted for inflation have actually declined since the early 80's. it is clear that corporate America is not allowing employes to share in the profits as they once did. Everything today is about maximizing short term profits for shareholders. The net effect of that policy has weakened the level of disposable income available to spur economic activity. That is why I said the opposite is true Phyllis. The currently employed is indivisible from the currently unemployed.

You want more answers Phyllis? Try these on for size. Since 1961 (52 years) there has been 28 years of Republican Presidents and 24 years of Democratic Presidents. A total of 66 million jobs were created in this 52 year time period. Here's the scorecard as verified by Politifact;
Republican job creation since 1961;
Nixon.....+7.1 million
Ford.......+1.3 million
Reagan..+14.7 million
H.W. Bush...+1.5 million
W. Bush......- 646,000
Total = +24 million
Democratic job creation since 1961;
Kennedy........+2.7 million
Johnson........+ 9.5 million
Carter............+9.0 million
Clinton...........+20.8 million
Obama..........+322,000
Total = 43 million
Conclusion: with 4 years less time in the White House since 1961, the Democratic President presided over 43 million job creation to the Republican President's 24 million. A 2:1 difference in job creation performance. Them there are answers you can believe in Phyllis.
Phyllis Stager

Now just wait a minute. First you send me on the path of studying the GDP, understanding it, etc. And now you are telling me that the real situation is that the Democrats create more jobs than Republicans and that is it in a nut shell!
Well, I will switch gears now, but your presentation of the above facts on job creation is not that clear cut. There are a barrel of factors which influence job creation other than Democrat party 'methods' and philosophy.
There are so many aspects which play into these numbers none of which can specifically say 'because of the Democrats'. First and foremost, the Democrats basic tenets have veered away from the Truman, Kennedy, Clinton type of Democrat. There are other influences which can be either quantitive or non quantitive. Clinton had a Republican Congress he was a compromiser not an ideologue. When did the Tech boom explode and then implode? Kennedy was there a short 3 years and he was one who reduced taxes. We also have the entry of NAFTA at some point, I forget when.
A 2:1 difference in job creation performance is demonstrative of a false conclusion by implication and not factual.

Murphy-Solon,
maybe Democrats "create" more jobs because they follow Republican Administrations that do all the groundwork for job creation and then turn over a private sector in better shape to the next administration. And to ward off your next train of thought, no I don't consider the Bush Administration as having done this.

Interesting Lori, my father ran a slicer at Republic Steel / LTV Steel for 43 years. He made a decent living at it. Well paying manufacturing jobs have been replaced by low paying service sector jobs and that is what has unraveled our economy in my opinion. We've been hearing the warning signs for years but yet so many act surprised. Also, I worked 40 hours a week and attended the University of Akron for 6 years to acquire my degree. I paid as I went w/o benefit of grants or loans. Since I graduated in 1990, the cost of a college education has increased 400%. The son of a steelworker had options back in the day but today the degree of difficulty is much higher.

Speaking of LTV, an interesting aside about James 'Jimmy' Ling, head of LTV, this guy has a fascinating biography. He was born in Oklahoma, orphaned, did not finish high school. He became an electrician and lived in the rear of his electrical shop in Dallas. The rest is history! I love stories like this.
And Lori, I think you are at least partially right that people, in general, vote according to their circumstances. However many 18-22 year olds in college, still living on mom and dads penny do not have 'circumstances' as their major influence. And 97% of the black vote was not dictated 100% by circumstances. I am far from being financially comfortable and my vote was influenced by my constitutionalist understanding. I want everyone to do well and no one to be prevented from making their way toward their dreams.
And Murphy, I think the steel industry was shut down by foreign steel imports, it was cheaper.

My husband's grandfather used to say, "Republicans in, no work. Democrats in, plenty of work". He was an immigrant from Italy and spoke little English. His first job in America was pushing a wheel barrel at Republic Steel. When he retired he was the Supertintendent at Republic Steel. He was right!
And Phyllis,
I believe people vote according to their circumstances

Saying "I believe people vote according to their circumstances", isn't that approaching what Romney said? Just in a more politically correct way?

Whatever the reason Phyllis, the point is that a shift from high paying labor to low paying labor is taking a toll on our economy and qualifying more people for government benefits then ever before. I don't get it either. I live alone out here on my 'ranch'. Only when I get together w/ friends to I get a chance to BS about various topics. We don't necessarily debate 'politics', its more social in nature.
I really enjoy exchanging points of view with those who have all sorts of different opinions and I love exploring the 'why' of these opinions and quite often I learn something I didn't know before. Like your mention of the GDP...I had to do some reading to really understand what made up the GDP...etc, etc, etc.
I think we inform each other, not necessarily to make 'converts' but to validate to ourselves in our own stance and to explore the topic from angles other than our own.

Murph-
That was an interesting detail you listed about the various presidents and the jobs created under each. I went to the PolitiFact article you got this info from, and it does also state, however, that other factors do influence these numbers. The article was based on Clinton's claim at the convention - and he stated this without any explanation of factors of why.
The article ends stating:
" It’s unclear how much this finding says about our political and economic systems
Job creation for each president depended to a certain extent on timing, external factors and luck. And as Yale political scientist David Mayhew pointed out for our previous story, conclusions drawn from a relatively narrow data set -- in this case, just 12 postwar presidencies -- need to be taken with a grain of salt.
Our ruling
Clinton’s figures check out, and they also mirror the broader results we came up with two years ago. Partisans are free to interpret these findings as they wish, but on the numbers, Clinton’s right. We rate his claim True."
It was also interesting the point that James made about the inconsistency in the number of jobs created compared to the unemployment rate. I wonder why the dichotomy. I assume these must be net jobs created, including jobs lost, if one can have a negative figure.

I agree with both Lyn and Phyllis. In my response to Phyllis I said that job creation is too complex to attribute to a single person in the Oval Office. But, is it not just as unfair to hold that same person singularly responsible for the whole of unemployment which many on the right have done? aren't they just two sides of the same coin? I believe the solution to our employment issue involves two distinct issues. 1) losing high paying manufacturing jobs to low wage countries and replacing them with low wage service sector jobs and 2) the resulting effect of the 2008 financial meltdown that collapsed the housing market and significantly suppressing economic activity. I argue that these two challenges are not a Republican or Democratic issue but rather an American issue. We must retrain our workforce to enable us to compete in a global economy. This will take time. P.S.: Thank you Phyllis for not rubbing in the Browns loss to the Cowboys..............
