Playoff Football: Shoremen Defeated, Avon Moves on in Semifinal Play
Avon will face Tiffin Columbian on Friday
The Avon Eagles will advance in playoff football after defeating the Perrysburg Yellow Jackets 28-11 in the Division II, Region 6 quarterfinal Nov. 2.
The Eagles overcame a 3-0 deficit at halftime to earn a win that will move the team to the regional semifinal Friday, Nov. 9 against top-seeded Tiffin Columbian.
According to the Morning Journal, Avon had just 131 yards of total offense in the first half and needed a spark.
That started when Avon sophomore Zack Torbert earned his first interception of his varsity career Friday night, as reported by the Chronicle Telegram. Cornerback Ross Douglas tallied three touchdowns in the second half. Avon’s scoring started with a David Zeh pass to Mark Kvach.
Avon Lake football suffered a rare shutout-loss Nov. 3, losing 28-0 to an undefeated Toledo Whitmer team Nov. 3 in the Division I, Region 2 quarterfinal at Whitmer Memorial Stadium.
According to the Chronicle Telegram, the Shoremen couldn’t take advantage of a “huge turnover late in the first quarter that had the Shoremen just 26 yards away from taking the lead.”
The Toledo Blade said Whitmer’s defense forced four Shoremen turnovers in the win, after several of their own in the first half, ending Avon Lake’s season.
The Morning Journal reported Whitmer, the two-time defending Region 2 champions, held Avon Lake to just 40 yards rushing and forced four turnovers. A Toledo interception in the last few seconds of the game preserved Whitmer’s shutout.
