Poll: What Do You Think about Repealing the Vicious Dog Ordinance?

Passionate arguments revolved around this issue for several years.

This week the Avon Lake City Council repealed an ordinance that branded pit bulls as vicious. The decision comes after years of often passionate arguments about pit bulls, a breed with an image problem.

While there have been some well-documented attacks by pit bulls on people and other dogs, pit bull advocates argue that those attacks are the result of abuse or training the dogs to fight and attack, and the owners and trainers are to blame.

The ordinance was repealed in part because it conflicted with Ohio law, which was recently changed regarding nuisance dogs, dangerous dogs and vicious dogs. Pit bulls are no longer automatically labeled vicious.

Cesar Chavez has spent many years trying to convince us of the unfairness of labeling any dog as inherently vicious and uncontrollable. I am convinced.
