Soccer moms and dads in Avon have something to celebrate.
Avon's city council voted Monday night to approve the city buying 1.2 acres of land on Schwartz Road to build a second entrance/exit for Schwartz Road Park.
The city will buy the land from descendents of the Schwartz family, which has owned the land for more than 100 years. The price is $125,000.
"When you start packing that many people in, you need another way in and out," Mayor Jim Smith said after the meeting.
The city plans to use the land to create the access to the park. Smith said trees will be planted to shield neighbors from lots of glare from the headlights of cars going into or leaving the park.
The red barn that has been on the Schwartz property for as long as anyone can remember is also part of the deal.
"We would love to keep it and use it," Smith said.
The land also comes with access to public utilities, so there can be future building such as another concession stand or restrooms.

Looks like the Schwartz Family made out good. $125k seems excessive especially for the public good but what do expect from a long time Mayor who sends out inappropriate letters prior to an election.

Avon Commons would not have so much traffic if people going east down Detroit from SR 83 would stay in the right lane and travel a half mile and use the second entrance. Or for that matter......drive just a little further to Jaycox and come in the back way. I can't understand why so many sit in that traffic when there are other alternatives that will keep you moving and sane.

It is just as long going to the second entrance. You still have to fight the traffic by Costco and Target. Maybe when the over pass is in people coming from the east will go that way.

Getting back to the park entrance... Please do what you can to keep the barn. We moved to Avon from Lakewood to Woodmore Estates 10+ years ago for the vineyards, cornfields and the red barn on Schwartz Road. In that time, we have seen the vineyards and cornfields turn into more houses, developements, more traffic and higher taxes. The red barn is a symbol of the 150 years the Schwartz Family spent building the Holy Trinity/Avon Community. Please preserve the barn as a symbol of the real work that went into how this community was started.
