From physics to fitness, Science Night at Heritage North and Heritage South elementary schools on Thursday night was all about showing students what science does in their lives.

"I love it," said Heritage South principal Jason Call of Science Night. "It's one of the highlights of the year. It shows students the practical applications of science, how science can be a career. And it's great to see them here with their families."

Exhibits included showing a catapult for playing cornhole, students generating energy by riding bikes, and a working Tesla coil.

The most popular exhibits involved the Grossology Labs, where students used chemistry to make fake snot and create burps using chemical reaction and balloons, and the Poly One exhibit where liquid nitrogen was used to make ice cream.

Let's Get Physical Therapy showed students about nutrition by having them do jumping jacks for a minute straight and then pointing out how many minutes of jumping jacks it would take to burn off their favorite snacks.

"I feel bad for my mom," one girl said, noticing in the exhibit that it takes 55 minutes of jumping jacks to burn off a Snickers bar. "She loves these."

Teacher Amy Rottman was thrilled with the turnout.

"I don't think anyone else has something like this," she said. "It's a community thing as much as a school thing. Parents, organizations, businesses, all come here to get the students excited about science."
