A levy that will allow the Avon Lake Public Library to restore Sunday hours and increase materials coasted to an easy victory May 3. With 100 percent of voted unofficially counted, Avon Lake voters cast 2,019 votes (62 percent) in support of the levy and 1,227 (38 percent) opposed.

“We are delighted,” Library Director Mary Crehore said. “On behalf of the Avon Lake Public Library, our thanks to the residents of Avon Lake for once again supporting their library.”

The replacement levy means an increase for homeowners. The levy called for the replacement of an existing levy of 1.8 mills, and an increase of 1 mill to cover current library expenses.

The increase amounts to $5 per month per $200,000 home evaluation. Taxpayers currently pay about $9 a month for the same property valuation. The five-year, 2.8-mill levy will $2.3 million a year.

Crehore said the increase will enable the library to boost the materials budget, restore Sunday hours, upgrade technology and continue maintenance of the facility. Sunday hours will be restored in 2012, when money is collected from the 2011 levy.
