Toledo Ends Avon’s Run at States

Injured Zeh leaves game in first half.

An injury to a key player didn’t help Avon High School’s effort against Toledo Central Catholic Nov. 16, as Avon ended its state championship run with a 42-15 loss.

Avon’s senior quarterback, David Zeh, was injured in the first half of the Division II regional final at Robert Bishop Stadium in Clyde, Ohio.

Both teams entered the competition 11-1.

“You will get no excuses, but it was obviously tough to go without one of the team's big guns,” Cleveland.com reported.  “According to Avon coach Mike Elder, Zeh had a head injury and the team's medical staff would not allow him to return to the game.”

Central Catholic’s Fighting Irish scored three touchdowns in the final 3:33 of the first half to open up the game in the Region 6 championship game.

“They’re playing great,” Irish coach Greg Dempsey told the Toledo Blade after Toledo Central Catholic advanced to the state semi-finals for the first time in seven years. “Monday through Thursday, this is how they practice, and they’re really locked in. It shows up on Friday night. They’re just a great group of kids.”

Toledo Central Catholic (12-1) will battle fifth-ranked Aurora (12-1) in a D-II semifinal Friday at 7:30 p.m. at a site to be determined.
