Tufts University Evaluating Deer Birth Control Option

Group will tour wooded areas of Avon Lake to determine feasibility for birth control.

Avon Lake Councilwoman Jennifer Fenderbosch said if residents see a group of individuals walking through wooded parts of Avon Lake, there’s no need for alarm.

A group of five individuals, who are part of a Tufts University study, will be canvassing different areas of the city, including the MetroPark conducting an evaluation as to whether Avon Lake is suitable for a birth control study for deer.

Fenderbosch first introduced the idea of birth control for deer in early spring of this year.

Fenderbosch was in discussions at the time with Tufts University and the Medical College of Ohio, who are studying the effects of PZP, a non-hormonal birth control dart for wild animals.

“The universities are interested in investigating the possibility of a long term birth control study of the white tailed deer in Avon Lake,” Fenderbosch said in a press release in late March.

At the Oct. 15 Avon Lake City Council meeting, Fenderbosch said a group would be touring wooded areas of Avon Lake, performing an evaluation as to whether Avon Lake’s deer situation would allow them to move forward with a birth control study.

“This is part of Tufts University’s study,” Fenderbosch said. “What they’re doing is different than any other study done in Ohio if the project goes through.”

Fenderbosch said the Humane Society of the United States is paying for air fare, hotel and expenses for the Tufts group.

Whether the project continues remains to be seen.

“If they believe this is an area they can move forward on, they will be back many, many more times,” Fenderbosch said.

Fenderbosch has taken a lead position on deer control in Avon Lake. Also on Monday, North Ridgeville City Council approved longbow deer hunting if certain conditions were met, reported News Net 5.

This sounds like it could be an effective alternative to hunting or culling, but will not be in any means a quick solution. Here's some info from the PZP link:

Normally, each animal is darted twice the first year, with the first injection being given up to a year before a booster, just preceding the breeding season (March for wild horses or September for deer). Thereafter, a single annual booster inoculation will maintain contraception. The second inoculation of the first year requires

1. that you are able to recognize the individual animals, or
2. that you do the first inoculation with a special "marker dart" which leaves a dye mark on the animal at the same time it injects the vaccine, or
3. that animals are treated opportunistically and randomly, with the hope of eventually treating a large proportion of the total population over the course of several years.

I like this idea. It is not a quick fix but it sounds humane. I hope the group comes to the Westwinds. They will find a LOT of deer.

Similar to the “sensors” approach that Dave Kos suggested, deer birth control is an utter nonsense solution to a problem that begs for a simple, very safe and inexpensive solution – culling the deer herd by bow. North Ridgeville appears to have it about right – Avon Lake does not.

Culling by bow is not only safe, it is very effective; it could generate city revenue and feed the poor! The lack of will and understanding of this issue is truly shocking that the city can’t bring itself to do the right thing for the right reason – preserving and maintaining health of the deer herd which culling is a big part. A bow is very safe as it only has an effective range of 35 yards, it is directional and ricochets are not an issue.

Birth control and sensors for a serious deer population problem is simply not an answer and to implement such programs to control the deer would be a total misuse of tax payer money!

SO there will be dead people (lots of kids) if a guy is out there with a crossbow or a rifle and a scope, but its FINE if some guy out there darting deer TWICE and HOPING its same deer. yea, sign Avon lake up for this and the mirror thing? Too bad the few dictate to the masses ONLY in Avon Lake. North Ridgeville of all areas could figure it out, what a shame. Lets all move out to Ridgeville-tear down our houses and let deer stay

Kimber, there will be NO rifle hunting, so please don't fan the flames with that.

As an aside, I would support the bow hunting more if shooting from a tree stand were a REQUIREMENT. Since you are shooting at a downward angle, there is little chance of stray shots traveling long distances.

If only we could make the deer really ugly. Then they might not even WANT to mate with each other! Seriously, though, we should give this study a chance. I think they tried birth control salt licks in the Cuyahoga Valley a few years ago - not sure how well that worked. I don't want bow hunters stalking deer - the stands make more sense. And I don't want to see any wonded deer with arrows sticking out of them. (Unlikely but very possible.) Even the darters (if we go that way) should use stands. They could set up feeding stations and a team of 2 can use a spotter (like snipers) to dart the right deer at the right time. This is a problem around the country and we are taking the deer's homes to build ours, so let's be smart AND humane.

I agree with you BWNash, and I'm slowly getting over my "kill them all!" mentality. At this point, I'm in favor of any plan that will reduce the deer population on a controlled basis.

But the plans for flashing lights on signs, and the comments of "oh just let them eat the landscaping" had made me feel that they weren't interested in managing the population!

Hopefully the study goes well and they can present a well formed plan with estimates of how the population will change over time.

I am too-my point was satire. This is NOT going to work. Hoping you dart the same deer 2x and/or the reflectors along the roadways? please-the deer are not afraid of anything. I wish there was other ways but it comes down to this-Us or them?? sorry can't be both. And how many of us are having MEAT for lunch today? c'mon, people. Get rid of the deer-i hate guns but let the hunters get them NOW!!!!

A while back, I posted a link to a youtube video of a deer attack. Not a person attacking a deer, and not a deer attacking a hunter, but rather a deer attacking a defenseless pet for (seemingly) no reason!

Make sure to watch to the end!

Deer..." The other red meat!" Or..."deer - it's what's for dinner!" Or...what do you call 12 dead deer....a good start!

If Avon Lake would be chosen for this experiment and if the Division of Wildlife would allow it, darting would happen every 2 to 3 years, not twice in the first year with boosters folowing. This is a new way to use PZP. The experiment would test PZP in time released pellets.

What a ridiculous waste of time and money. Darting the same deer several times, okay good luck, what a stupid idea. This is how the Humane Society wastes your donated moneys. Bow hunting from an elevated platform encompasses about 30 yards from point of release. This is on private property. Kimber, maybe you should not allow your kids to trespass on private property and how about you back up your ignorant comment with some statistics? And if you eat meat you are a hypocrite as well.

Yikes!! Kind of harsh there. I just saw a car hit a deer that ran out in front of him on Lake Rd. this morning. Trashed his front end. My guess is that the cost in deductible and coverage for the repair will be much more than it would cost to dart a few deer.
The two of you need to kiss and make up!!

Sorry Kimber I got carried away. When I saw the lots of dead kids sentence I misunderstood your message. I was rude even if that had been the message. I'm really not a moron, just frustrated with the situation. I think the deer need to be managed and the population controlled; they are both wonderful AND delicious.

Take a look at this story...anyone who is AGAINST hunting these rodents needs to rethink their stance.
