What's the Best Staycation in Avon Lake?

The Aqua Marine was once a premier vacation destination. It's gone but the city remains a great place to visit in the summer.

Looking to stay a little closer to home this year? Don’t have the time, money or patience to put up with air or car travel?

Did you know there was a time when the city of Avon Lake was one of the premier vacation destinations in the country? People would arrive from all over to stay at the Aqua Marine, which in its heyday was a top vacation destination in the United States.

The Aqua Marine resort is now home to condos but Avon Lake’s proximity to Lake Erie, natural beaches and extensive parks, it’s not a bad place to vacation this summer. People still come from around the world to spend a few days at Sunset Shores Bed & Breakfast, take in a sunset or join a fishing excursion (after picking up some bait at John's Bait & Tackle).

Maybe your destination is Lake Erie to fish, jet ski, swim, tube or go boating. Miller Road Park brings out thousands on a hot day to sunbathe, swim, catch a concert in the park or visit the historic Peter Miller House & Museum. Boaters have easy access with the boat launch and ample parking.

Or maybe Avon Lake is a leg on your cross state, county or country bike trip. Did you know that Lake Road is often part of the longer coast-to-coast bike corridor offered on summer bike tours?

Here’s your choices:

  • Lake Erie! (Fishing, jet skiing, swimming, tubing and boating)
  • Miller Road Park
  • Bike excursion
  • A few days at Sunset Shores B&B

The best place to go in Avon lake is the Easter border. From there your just a minute away from Bay Village.

Sorry, but all you have is Bay village on the Eastern border, and before there is anything worthwhile you have to drive another 10 minutes east. All the great places to relax are on the Western border. Miller rd park, the beach, Veterans Park, and the great big boat launch. Plus, you can check out the Folger house.

Why not visit Veterans to enjoy the lake, glimpse the quaint boat club, and visit the historic Folger Home. Check out the WWI Veterans' plaque in the flag circle to learn how and why our streets were named. Did you know the city purchased the Folger Home in 1926 and our Mayors called it home until 2001?

Just a memory about the Aquamarine. You could stay ther all year round. In 1971 we made reservations for New Years eve, and had a great time. There was a great restaurant, bar, indoor swimming pool, and lots of entertainment then.
