Organ Transplant: Friday Concert Will Help Move Organ From Cleveland to Avon Lake

Donations accepted to help rebuild pipe organ for St. Joseph Church.

A concert of sacred, Broadway and patriotic music to open the summer and raise funds for a project to rebuild a pipe organ for St. Joseph Church will be held Friday, May 24. The concert will feature the St. Joseph Senior Choir, under the direction of Lorene Coughlin, and the Patriots Symphonic Band, under the direction of Harry Pfingsten. Soloists with the band, also members of the choir, are Brian Walsh and Lorene Coughlin, both of whom will perform that evening.  The concert will be held in the church at 32929 Lake Road, beginning at 7:30 p.m. There is no price of admission, but a free will offering will be accepted to help us rebuild the organ, which has previously served at St. John the Evangelist Cathedral in Cleveland and at Holy …

Zurkey Farewell Concert, Get Together is Sunday, May 19

One hour concert, reception is open to the public.

After 36 years, Avon Lake High School choral director Bill Zurkey conducted his last concert Thursday night in the school’s PAC. While the night proved to be a memorable one for Zurkey, his family, performers and guests, one last surprise remained: Plans were announced for a farewell concert, "The End of an Era," on Sunday, May 18, at 1 p.m. in the Avon Lake High School Performing Arts Center (PAC). Former and current students, school personnel and those who may have become acquainted with Zurkey, who was recently honored by Bowling Green State University as a 2013 College Alumni Award Recipients, are invited to come by, hear the concert and join the reception. Alana Bilancini Highlights Open Mic Night

Avon Lake's own will perform on May 9 at 7 p.m.

Rising musician Alana Bilancini will be the featured performer at this month’s Open Mic on May 9 at the Old Firehous Community Center. Bilancini, an Avon Lake native, is a singer and song-writer who performs both as a soloist and as the bass player for the local band," Says She."   She will perform a variety of original songs and some popular covers.  After Bilancini's set, the microphone opens up for everyone; signups begin at 6:30 p.m.   If those reasons aren't enough, there will also be free coffee and cookies for performers and guests.

Drum Corps International Stopping in Avon Lake During National Tour

Show is part of national tour

The Shoremen Brass Classic Drum Corps International (DCI) is returning to Avon Lake. Last year, high-stepping, high-volume bands from around the country including Portland, OR, Santa Clara, CA; New London, CT; Nashville, Wayne, NJ and Sudbury, Ontario performed in the Avon Lake High School's Memorial Stadium.   The pageantry returns, as the second-annual Shoremen Brass Classic Drum Corps International (DCI) competition is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, again in Avon Lake Memorial Stadium. 'House Concert' Tonight in Avon Will Feature Amy Speace

Fresh off NPR's Mountain Stage

Some area fans of Amy Speace and "singer-songwriter/folk/Americana music," are hosting the artist tonight at an indoor "house concert" starting at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.) in Avon. Last week, the New York Times featured Speace under the headline, If You Like Judy Collins, Try Amy Speace. The Baltimore native and Amherst College graduate will be at Jeff Hudson's house tonight (RSVP required, see below). "We are fans of Amy and are on her mailing list," Hudson said. Superintendent, Councilwoman will Read at Library's Saturday Read-A-Thon

Stop in at the children's area between noon and 2 p.m. April 20.

The Avon Branch Library Teen Volunteer Group is hosting the Community Read-A-Thon in celebration of National Library Week (April 14 - 20) that will include a number of respected community members reading from their favorite books. Guest readers include Michael Laub, Avon schools superintendent, a school board member, a principal and various other people who work in schools.  Also scheduled to read are a doctor and a Cub Scout leader.  Avon City Council members Mary Berges and Daniel Urban are taking time out of their weekend to share, as well. Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club WIns Ohio 'Garden Club of the Year

Will now compete at the national level.

Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club came up as big winners at the April 16-17 85th Annual Convention of Garden Clubs of Ohio, including “2012 Garden Club of the Year.” The convention was held at the Sheraton Suites in Cuyahoga Falls. “Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club entered a number of projects and programs along with our Flower Show from last summer,” Club president Audrey Roberts said. 'All Shook Up' Opens at ALHS This Weekend

Musical features the music of Elvis Presley; opens Thursday.

Are you an Elvis fan? Love rock and roll? ALHS has a show for you. The Avon Lake Performin’ Shoremen will present the hip-shakin’, juke box musical, All Shook Up, this weekend at the Dr. Daniel Ross Performing Arts Center. The show, inspired by the songs of Elvis Presley, will feature music made famous by "The King," Elvis Presley. The play is about a a sad, square town that is turned upside down when a guitar-playing roustabout, Chad  Avon Lake High School senior, Tom Sweeney), rides in on his motorcycle looking for a mechanic. Avon Native Returns for 'The Butternut Tree' Book Signing

Author's story, based on real events, is based in Avon.

What has started as a memoir of the a personal story of rape, attitude and condemnation for author Maureen Ann Richards Kostalnick has turned into a first novel for the Avon native. The story, based in Avon, is a psuedo work of fiction with roots based on a true incident of two girls raped in Avon. “It’s fiction, but based on a true crime,” Kostalnick said, adding that the coming of age story in the 1940s and 50s is “99.9 percent true” The Butternut Tree is being re-eleased in the Cleveland area this week and Lostalnick  will hold a book signing in at Strip Steakhouse in Avon April 6. Although fiction, the book draws strong parallels to Kostalnick’s upbringing in Avon where she was baptized, made Communion and married at St. Mary’s Church…
