ADULT BOOK DISCUSSION Be enlightened by other points of view at Lorain Public Library System’s Avon Branch Library. The Adult Book Discussion group will meet Wednesday, April 3 at 7 p.m. to discuss Mudbound by Hillary Jordan. Based in 1946 in the segregated Mississippi Delta, an unlikely friendship between two servicemen, both recently back from war but from different social classes, drives this novel. Long Ago Avon/Avon Lake: First Ladies Auxiliary installation at VFW Post 7035

1967 photo taken in Avon by Avon Lake historian John Robertson.

This photo was taken by Avon Lake’s John Robertson who passed away in January 2011 at age 86.  The photo is now a part of Cleveland State University’s Cleveland Memory Project. The photo is titled, “Ladies Auxiliary of the Avon Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars, Avon Lake, Ohio 1967.” The photo captures the first Ladies Auxiliary installation held at the VFW Post 7035 in Avon. It is currently in the respository of the Avon Lake Public Library. (Copyright information.)  John was a World War II vet who parachuted into France during the Normandy invasion, earning a Purple Heart.    He served as president of the Avon Lake Historical and was a member of the  Avon Lake VFW Post 8796 and North Ridgeville VFW Post 9871.

Upcoming events at the Avon Public Library. The Avon Branch Library is located at 37485 Harvest Drive, Avon. STORY TIMES Avon Branch Library has Preschool Story Times on Tuesday, March 12 and 19 at 10:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. Three through 5 year olds will enjoy stories, music and activities. On Thursday, March 14 and 21, the Library has story times for children all ages. Bring your babies from 6 to 23 months old for stories, music and finger plays at 10:30 a.m. Two year olds and their caregivers are welcome at Two Steppin’ Twos at 11:15 a.m. for stories, music and finger plays. AHS's Beauty and the Beast This Weekend Only

Popular show is based on Disney movie, Broadway hit.

This weekend only, the Avon High School Drama Club and Thespian Troupe 3229 will present the Disney classic and Broadway show, Beauty and the Beast. The play will run from March 8 – 10 at Avon High School.  The show is based on the Academy-Award winning animated feature. The stage version includes music written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman along with new songs by Menken and Rice. The Avon show stars Gracie Fumic as Belle and Matt Spiroff at The Beast.    The audience will be transported to the heart of provincial life in a small French town. Symphonic Band to Perform at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall

One of three high school bands nationally selected to play.

The Avon Lake  High School Symphonic Band is one of four bands from throughout the USA selected to perform at the 4th Annual Percy Grainger Wind Band Festival this weekend. The band, under the direction of David Eddleman, will perform during the matinee on March 9 in Chicago’s Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center. “This is pretty big time,” Eddleman said. “I’m trying to impress upon the kids the magnitude of this.” The band has also played at Severance Hall, home of the Cleveland Orchestra. Eddleman applied last spring and was required to send in recordings from the past 12 months and include where the group has performed. He found out last May Avon Lake was one of three high schools selected. One university from Louisiana will also perform …

300 Students Take the Stage to Sing to Packed PAC House

Four choirs and the Merples come together for festival.

The 12th Annual Elementary Choir Festival held Feb. 27 brought together more than 300 Avon Lake third and fourth-grade students in one evening for the 12th Annual Elementary Choir Festival.  The festival, held at Avon Lake High School’s Performing Arts Center, featured choirs from Eastview, Erieview, Redwood and Westview elementary schools.  Also joining the festival were the Merples, an elite group of singers from the high school chorale. The event resulted in standing-room-only in the Performing Arts Center. The choirs each sang three songs individually, with Westview—under the direction of Jan Meyers-- performing several songs including Over the Rainbow.
