Renewal levies to be voted on by City Council next week
Renewal levies for the Avon police and fire departments could be put up for a vote in the August special election. Avon City Council will be voting in the April 9 meeting on submitting the levies to the Lorain County Board of Elections. Council discussed the levies during Monday's work session. "The quality of services we get from these departments with no increase in these levies in years is impressive," said councilman Bryan Jensen. The levies would be voted on in the August 7 special election. The fire levy is for .5 mills for five years, and will generate about $273,447 per year. The police levy is for .5 mills over five years, and will generate about $369,511 per year. The levies are for what is called "capital assets," such as …

Results from Tuesday's voting
While Mitt Romney scored a narrow victory in Ohio's Republican presidential primary, the gap was much wider in Avon. Romney won Avon by a nearly 2-to-1 margin over Rick Santorum. The dropoff was sharp after those top two, with about 900 votes separating Santorum from third-place finisher Newt Gingrich. Ron Paul was fourth with 473 votes. Neither Rick Perry nor Jon Huntsman got more than 35 votes. Santorum was hurt in not being on the ballot in parts of Lorain County. Still, the gap between he and Romney was a bit narrower countywide. Mitt Romney won in the cities and suburbs, perhaps just enough to hold off Rick Santorum voters in the state's rural areas.
Mitt Romney narrowly defeated Rick Santorum Tuesday in the Ohio Republican primary to claim most of the delegates and the giant symbolic prize that is the Buckeye State. While some votes remain outstanding, the Associated Press, CNN and other media organizations have called the race for Romney. Romney performed well in the state's population centers, including Northeast Ohio, but could not defeat Santorum in the state's rural areas, according to results with 96 percent of the precincts reporting. Romney claimed the counties that included Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and other big cities. Newt Gingrich played the spoiler role, collecting about 15 percent of the vote. Here are the unofficial results from the Ohio Secretary of State: …
Renewal operating levy passes by wider margin
Now what? That's the question officials with Avon Local Schools face after a $32 million bond issue to build a new Avon Middle School lost by 141 votes Tuesday night. Issue 11 -- a $32 million, 2.25 mill, 32-year bond issue to build the new middle school -- got 2,816 in favor but 2,957 against. The vote is unofficial. Early absentee voting was harsh on the bond issue. It trailed by an almost 60-40 percent margin early Tuesday night. But as the night went on, the gap narrowed to less than 35 votes at one point, giving supporters gathered in the middle school library hope. That hope was dashed around 11 p.m. "We still have a challenge," school board president Kevin Romanchok said. "The kids are still coming, the need has not disappeared and…
