School board member Ron Jantz: We are producing an album full of snapshots that forms the foundation for the future of our Avon Lake students.
Editor’s note: This letter is part of a group of 5 letters from Avon Lake Board of Education members. The letters are in support of Issue 10, a 10-year emergency levy will generate $6.5 million per year at a cost of $253.58 per $100,000 home valuation. To the Editor: DeWitt Jones is a noted photographer who says it’s important to “Celebrate What’s Right in the World.” He does so by sharing the moments he captures through the lens of his camera. My wife Stacy and I love to take pictures too and we certainly celebrate what’s right in our life with these images. If we point the lens of our camera on the community here in Avon Lake, our schools come into focus. Stacy took a picture of our daughter once as she was thrusting her French horn in …

Since graduating from ALHS last June, I have been attending Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh to study Computer Science (CS) & Art. CMU is widely ranked as being one of the top 3 CS schools in the world, so it isn’t easy to get into, but I made it in because of the education I received from K to 12 in Avon Lake City Schools. CMU’s Art School is also well-known (Andy Warhol graduated from it) and the art education I gained through ALCS‘ wide-offering of art-related courses greatly inspired my passion for art and vastly improved my artistic talents. While at ALHS, I took several AP courses and took courses through LCCC. With these courses I was able to receive enough college credit that I started at CMU as a sophomore! CMU is …

The letters are in support of Issue 10, a 10-year emergency levy will generate $6.5 million per year at a cost of $253.58 per $100,000 home valuation. To the Editor: I live in Avon Lake and am a parent of two young children. My daughter is a first grader and my son is about to enter kindergarten in the fall. Every day, I look at my kids and think about their potential, as it is amazing to see them learn and grow so quickly. I want my children to receive a better education than I had, to have the very best teachers, and to go to school in a safe and positive environment. Their future is the most important thing to me as a parent. My …

To the Voters of Avon Lake: We have a story.... we grew up in Parma (and Parma Hts.) the first being the seventh largest suburb in Ohio. It had 14- plus elementary schools, three junior high schools and three high schools. Families moved from all over to this city because it was "The Place" to live. It offered great schools, great neighborhoods, a rec center, the area's first mall, major industry (General Motors) and Metroparks laced through our neighborhoods. Still, there was a "small town" feel to the community. For awhile we were on track, getting levies passed and continuing the education standards that our community expected and keeping property values up. Art, music and gym were integral parts of our day - classes that help "round" a…

Editor’s note: This letter is part of a group of 5 letters from Avon Lake Board of Education members. The letters are in support of Issue 10, a 10-year emergency levy will generate $6.5 million per year at a cost of $253.58 per $100,000 home valuation. The purpose of the Avon Lake School Levy Issue 10 is to 1) replace funding diverted to other districts and charter school thanks to lawmakers in Columbus, and 2) restore the loss of tax revenue resulting from the reduction in electricity generated and inevitable closure of the GenOn power plant. The “simple solutions” recently proposed by knowledgeable citizens to solve our District’s financial problems are perplexing. For over 20 years our elected officials in Columbus have failed to …

To the Editor: I went to see the Avon Lake High School production of All Shook Up this past weekend. I was amazed at the talent of our students: from the acting and singing to the musicians and set designers! The skills that these students have did not just happen overnight. From elementary school through Avon Lake High School, they have been given the opportunity to learn and perfect their skills from excellent and dedicated teachers in the Avon Lake City School District. Avon Lake is …

Four-year councilman, Kevin Ward, will run for mayor in November General Election.
A second candidate, also an Avon councilman, has announced he will run for mayor of Avon in November 2013. Councilman Kevin Ward, in his fourth year serving Ward III, announced his candidacy April 25. Earlier this week, Ward 1 Counclman Bryan Jensen announced he will run for the seat currently held by Jim Smith, who said he is retiring this year. “When I was elected to Avon City Council in 2009, my only desire was to serve the residents of Avon to the best of my ability,” Ward said in a press release. “I have enjoyed serving with Mayor Jim Smith and his staff, along with my fellow members of council. With Mayor Smith’s retirement at the end of the year, I believe Avon will need someone with leadership skills and a wide range of experience …
