Avon Lake U.C.C. to Host 6th Annual Dog Wash & Inaugural Dirty Dog 5K
May 30, 2012 – (Avon Lake, Ohio) The youth groups at Avon Lake United Church of Christ are holding their 6th Annual FREE Dog Wash on Saturday July 21st. This year, in addition to the Dog Wash, they are also holding the inaugural Dirty Dog 5K & 1‐Mile Dog Walk.
The Dog Wash is held on the front lawn of the church and the race will take participants through some of the neighborhoods to the west of the church and eventually circles back to the finish line, also at the church. The race is administered by Hermes Road Racing and begins at 9:00am with pre-registration starting at 8:30am. There is a $20 fee for each racer or walker to participate in the event. Each participant receives a Dirty Dog 5K t-shirt.
Immediately following the race the FREE Dog Wash begins and runs until 3:00pm. Several “dog‐friendly” companies will be on hand along with a number of rescue groups bringing dogs available for adoption. A DJ, LIVE music, games, contests, concessions and much more round out the event.
The Dog Wash and Dirty Dog 5K are fundraisers for the Youth Ministry programs at Avon Lake U.C.C. Specifically the proceeds from this event are used to help fund the various mission trips that Jr. High youth and High School youth from the church attend each summer. This summer over 100 youth and adults will participate in mission trips to Hosanna Industries in Rochester, PA and Washington U.C.C. in Cincinnati, OH.
Avon Lake U.C.C. Director of Youth Ministries, Nate Taylor says, "The Dog Wash was an off-the-cuff idea from a church member that has grown into one of our most successful fundraisers. The continued support for this event provides so many young people with the opportunity to go out into the world and help others in need. It's a win-win for everyone".

More About Avon Lake United Church of Christ
Avon Lake United Church of Christ (ALUCC) is one of the most active churches in the area. Founded in 1896, it is the oldest church in Avon Lake. It considers itself a community church and hosts a number of groups including the Avon Lake Women's Chorus, Girl Scout, Cub Scouts, music and theater groups and three weekly Alcoholics Anonymous groups.
"We think of ourselves as a caring church family – a church for people who like to think for themselves," Pastor Kelly Brill said. "We care for one another through parish nursing programs and our Stephen Ministry program. We have Christian Education opportunities for all ages. Our full-time youth director organizes year-round service and learning activities for youth in fifth - 12th grade."
Brill noted that the church's communion table is open to all.
The church offers adult education courses including book and film discussion, Bible study and support groups. It also maintains two adult vocal choirs, a bell choir, and a children's choir.
ALUCC manages the Good Neighbor Thrift Shop on the corner of Lear Road and Electric Boulevard. The long-running store, which sells quality resale items, is an outreach ministry. The church is active in hands-on mission work and helps with Haven Center homeless shelter in Lorain, St. Paul's Community Church in Ohio City and the Family Promise Interfaith Hospitality Network. It also sponsors a mission hospital in India.
The church prides itself on its members heavy involvement in the church as well as the community. In 2010, the church began construction on a new youth center, called the Buoy.
