5 Things About the Avon - Avon Lake Football Rivalry

Aug. 29 is the day this year as once again, the Avon Eagles take on the Avon Lake Shoremen. Besides playing in different divisions, the Eagles have bested the Shoremen two out of three times since 2010.

  1. The rivalry goes beyond the gridiron. The on-field competition is complemented by a good-natured food drive rivalry, The Souper Bowl.  Both Avon and Avon Lake supporters will donate food during the game with the city collecting the most canned and non-perishable foods declared the winner. The Souper Bowl benefits Community Resource Services, who provides needed assistance to residents of Avon and Avon Lake.
  2. The first Avon-Avon Lake football competition in recent years was in 2010, when Avon Lake debuted its new football stadium. In a surprise victory, the Div. III Eagles trounced the Div. 2 Shoremen 21-3 in their season openers.
  3. In 2011, prior to the Aug. 25 game at Avon Stadium, the city of Avon debuted “Go Avon, Beat Avon Lake” banners around town.  he Eagles routed Avon Lake 38-7 courtesy of 3 O’Rourke-Eckhardt connections that year.
  4. Third time was the charm for the Shoremen, who bested Avon 42-28 in 2012 at Avon Lake’s Memorial Stadium.
  5. The 2013 Avon – Avon Lake football game is set for Aug. 29, as is this year’s Souper Bowl. Both will be held at Avon Stadium.
