Avon Lake Citywide Garage Sale Set for June 5 - 9

Planning a sale? Add it to our events. Planning on attending? Save the date.

Last year’s informal “citywide garage sale” was such a hit, the woman who helped organize it last year, Kelli Bodey, is hoping to repeat it this year.

Bodey said numerous residents are already planning to hold garage sales on June 5 – 9.

Bodey took the opportunity to raise funds.

"I like to 'sell for a cause'. Last year we sold a ton and donated over a $1,000 to relocate a woman and her two daughters fleeing a very abusive relationship. I get to lessen my clutter and, boy does it feels good to help," Bodey said.

Last year, Patch helped promote the effort and this year, Avon-Avon Lake Patch will again be promoting the sales the week of the garage sales.

Anyone who is planning on the “informal” garage sale can post his or her sale in Avon-Avon Lake Patch’s events section (and feel free to add photos) and we’ll add it to a formal list the week of the sale.

The sale, which is not city sponsored, is an opportunity for “one-stop” shopping for deals in Avon Lake.

If you’re planning on hosting a garage sale on that date, take note: there are rules to follow.

Avon Lake’s Zoning Administrator Ruth Booher said while the city does not require permits for sales, those hosting them need to be careful where they advertise.

“(Yard or garage sale signs) are not permitted in the city right of way,” Booher said. Signs placed there can be removed by the city.

How excited are people for another sale? Bodey collected some quotes from last year’s participants. Here they are:

  • "It's so much fun seeing everyone out and excited to find a treasure to take home! I always meet the nicest people with the most interesting stories." - Nicholas J. - Avon Lake resident
  • "I find the best deals at Avon Lake garage sales. I have furnished two homes and gotten fabulous gifts for myself and my family and friends - at a fraction of what I thought I would have to spend. I am watching the AvonLakePatch website to plan my trip! I cannot wait for this years' sales." - Charlotte H.
  • "While it's true that one man's trash is another man's treasure, you don't always have to dig for it!" - Matt V. - Avon Lake resident
  • "I'm just happy to get RID of all this clutter! She says "...but it's too good to just give away or toss..."  I say "come and get it! Clear it out!" - Lee R. - Avon Lake resident
  • "We plan our route by the addresses on the 'Patch' and try to get to all the interesting sales first!!  We girls are so excited that there are so many sales in one weekend - especially since this one will be before our vacation! New wardrobe!" - The Sale-ing Sisters  -  Westlake, Ohio
  • "My boys grow so fast that it just makes sense to get them their rough and tumble clothes from other fast-growers. I come to Avon Lake for the clean, well cared for clothes. I found a few families that have boys a size or two ahead of Mitchel and Kevin, so I go there first. They think of me when sorting their sell pile." - Mimi Davis - Rocky River
  • "Oh, Boy! I am so glad I found out early! I'm going to start saving now. We had a blast last year." - Marilyn Sharle  - Lakewood
  • "It's really the only time we LOVE getting up early! We have a shopping list and measurements ready for Avon Lake sale days!" - Gabriella and Mike - Avon, OH
  • "I don't know how I possibly have so much to sell. Where did this all come from?! If the kids didn't take it with them, I'll sell it to you for cheap." - Martha Jean  - Avon Lake seller
  • "I got all my tools and hardware from the sales last year - even wood to build my raised bed gardens. I'm ready for more... a lot more!" - Dan Williams - Handy Guy
  • "I had so many customers that I didn't have to do the second day like I thought. It was great piggy-backing on the neighbors' sales. We went in on our sign-making together and just put balloons out. It was great." - Name Withheld by request
  • "The streets are wide enough in Avon Lake, there are sales on every street and the people are a ton nicer than some cities. Prices are super cheap, too. We will be back every year!" - Tess, Claire and Mary Beth - Westlake
  • "I teach my kids the value of a dollar, and it's an easier lessen without the ridiculous signs, sparkle and lures they use in retail stores. You get a feel for how things last, too. We buy from people who take care of their things. You can find great deals and make your income last a lot longer shopping carefully. My kids learn a lot from garage sales."  - Tim G. North Olmsted
  • "My girls are very excited to have their first lemonade stand this year. They are planning every aspect." - Proud Mom  - Armour Rd., Avon Lake
