Avon Lake High School Symphonic Band To Play With CSU Wind Ensemble

Learwood students invited to play in Ohio Music Education Association Middle School Honors Band

It’s no secret Avon Lake boasts one of the best music programs in the country. The district has earned a place on the Namm Foundation’s “Best Communities for Music Education” survey numerous years, including 2009 and 2010.

Music programs from Learwood Middle School and Avon Lake High School earned accolades recently and are gearing up a host of events in March.

March will be a busy month for the Bands. On March 2, The Avon Lake High School Symphonic Band has been invited to perform with the Cleveland State University Wind Ensemble at 8 p.m. on March 2 at CSU.

On March 8, both the Symphonic Band and Concert Band will perform their winter band concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Avon Lake High School Performing Arts Center. The community is welcome to attend.

Finishing off the last days of winter, the Symphonic Band and Concert Band will be performing at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) District Band Contest on either March 18 or 19 at Strongsville High School. Both bands are directed by David Eddleman.

Learwood Middle School

Eleven students have been nominated and were selected to perform in the 2011 Ohio Music Education Association Middle School Honors Band for Lorain and western Cuyahoga counties. Their performance will be conducted by renowned band and wind ensemble composer David Shaffer.

Madison Hansborough, Emily Hill, Nikolas Theofylaktos, Ashley Bradley, Kyle Ciarrone, Cathy Hawrylko, Caroline Wansack, Ilana Shapiro, Will Popiel and Paul Woyat will be performing at the Lakewood High School Civic Auditorium on Saturday, March 12 at 4 p.m. This performance is free and open to the public. In addition to the Honors Band, there will be an Honors Orchestra and Honor Choir performing. Donations to OMEA are welcome.

The Learwood Music Department will be running its annual music fundraiser from March 14 through March 24. Details with be forthcoming. This is their only fundraiser of the school year. The proceeds from this fundraiser directly benefit the music students at Learwood. Fundraiser orders can be taken by any Learwood music student.
