Avon Lake Students Show Their Colors at Reflections Arts Fair

Avon Lake students submit more than 1,500 entries and 24 entries advance to the state level.

Hundreds of Avon Lake students, parents and friends turned out March 12 to view more than 1,500 works of art interpreting the theme, “Together We Can” at the 2011 24th Annual Reflections Arts Fair.

The annual statewide event, sponsored locally by the Avon Lake PTAs, St. Joseph POT and the Avon Lake Board of Education allows students to explore their talents in visual arts, photography, literature, music and film.

This year's event chair was Catherine Nowak, owner of in Avon Lake. Board of Education member Ron Jantz, who is also a broadcaster, emceed the award ceremony.

Students who submitted 24 “Best of Show” entries were honored at an event held in Performing Arts Center. The Merples, which consists of the top 16 male and female singers in the high school’s chorale, opened the show with a varied performance that included their own rendition of Katy Perry’s Firework, under the direction of Bill Zurkey.

Natalie Mealey performed Robaroque: A Tribute on the piano and John Warren performed Little Things, both original works.

After presentations by Superintendent Bob Scott, Mayor K. C. Zuber and St. Joseph School principal Patricia Vaccaro the Avon Lake High School Jazz Band under the direction of Dave Eddleman.

In the high school Commons area, guests enjoyed galleries, crafts, concessions and performances.
