Mighty Goliath Productions is ready to open this weekend, and with more than 20 family units in this year’s production of Oklahoma!
The play is one of Avon Lake's largest attended events of the year.
Their 54th consecutive production kick off Oklahoma! on Friday, Feb 8 at the Daniel B. Ross Performing Arts Center at Avon Lake High School.
Since the inception of MGP in 1959, family has been the name of the game. Each year the MGP production boasts a large number of family units which is not the norm for community theatre.
Oklahoma! continues the family tradition with over 20 family units involved in the production. Director Ian Atwood is co-producing Oklahoma! with his wife Jessica who is also the choreographer. Ian and Jess also recruited their parents, uncle, and cousins to be involved in Oklahoma!
Oklahoma! by Rodgers and Hammerstein, is set in the Oklahoma territory in the early 1900s. This classic musical tells the story of two pairs of lovers. Curly is a cowboy who has trouble admitting his feelings to Laurey, as she does to him, because of their stubbornness. Judd, the hired hand at Laurey's farm, tries to come between them. Ado Annie is torn between Will, a cowboy who has strong feelings for her, and Ali Hakim, a peddler who's a ladies' man and doesn't want to marry her.
Oklahoma! tackles class issues between the farmers and the cowmen in the still-developing, rugged landscape of a state in its infancy as characters struggle to find hope, love and the fulfillment of "the American Dream. Oklahoma! features musical classics such as “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'” “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top,” “Kansas City,” “I Cain’t Say No,” “People Will Say We’re in Love” and “Oklahoma.”
The Avon Lake production Oklahoma! stars the dreamy Jerry Popiel as Curly, the beautiful Meggie Wittman as Laurey, the lovely Colleen Kane as Aunt Eller, the talented Gilgamesh Taggett as Jud Fry, the adorable Douglas Bailey II as Will Parker, and the flirtatious Susan Didino as Ado Annie.
