Avon Lake vs. North Royalton on 9/16/13

On a night when the WWE’s Monday Night Raw took place live in Cleveland, it was fitting that the game between Avon Lake and North Royalton at times more closely resembled a big time wrestling match than a soccer match.  With a Royalton supporter doing his best Ric “The Nature Boy” Flair impression in the stands – Wooooooooo! – the Lady Bears body slammed the Shoregals by a score of 7-0.

Goals were flying in the net faster than wrestlers getting thrown out of the ring at the Royal Rumble as North Royalton scored 4 times in the first half and followed up with another 3 tallies in the second half.  Opening the scoring for the Lady Bears was sophomore Jessica Stauss less than four minutes into the game.  That was followed up by a goal off a free kick from fellow soph. Alex Rechner, then senior Angela Spilker scored two goals to close out the half.

In the second half, senior All-Ohio forward Briana Steward made a brilliant run through the Shoregal defense to strike a shot on goal which was blocked by the AL goalie and then Steward was able to collect the rebound and put it in the back of the net.  Later in the half, Stauss shot in her second goal of the game and then junior Alyson Rohrer closed out the scoring on the night.   For Avon Lake, freshman Lauren Anthony was able to muster the only shot on goal on the night for the Shoregals.

This game featured a little bit of everything including physical play that Hulk Hogan would be proud of as a Shoregal defender was both punched in the back and later thrown to the turf both of which resulted in yellow cards on North Royalton – very similar to the WWE action that was happening concurrently at the Q.  All that was missing was the infamous folding metal chair coming out on the field next.

In goal for Avon Lake was senior Amy Crooks who made 4 saves and soph. Elise Duvall subbed in and saved two shots.  For the Lady Bears, soph. Maria Humayun  recorded one save.

In the JV undercard, Avon Lake put a headlock on the Royalton JVs and pinned them with a 3-1 defeat.  For the Shoregals, soph. Lindsay Butler scored a first half goal to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.  The second half saw the NR JVs tie the game about 10 minutes into the half.  Then the AL JVs got busy - soph. Mae Quinn sent a great crossing pass to fellow soph. Casey Baughman who made a nice turnaround shot to give the Shoregals the lead.  The game was put out of reach shortly thereafter as soph. Bri Carlin made a sharp lead pass to freshman Mackenzie Jacob who finished with a shot past the NR goalie.  The lone NR goal snapped a five game shutout streak by the AL JVs who went approx. 400 minutes without conceding a goal.  In the nets for the JV Shoregals was soph. goalie Elise Duvall and now the JV record has improved to 6-1-2.   All that can be said to that is - Wooooooooo!!

On a more serious note, please take the time to read the attached article from Laura Rickey regarding her mother's Alzheimer disease and "Audrey's Army". Laura is a former Shoregals soccer player who was a member of the Varsity team for 4 years from 2005 to 2008.  I'm sure they would be appreciative of any support from the Shoregal soccer family.
