Avon Lake vs. Westlake on 9/11/13

A high school girl’s varsity game is 80 minutes in length, but Wednesday’s match between Avon Lake and Westlake was decided in the very first minute. Westlake senior forward Lauren Hurst took a pass from fellow senior Megan Konrad and dribbled up the left flank through the Avon Lake defense to send a shot into the net that proved to be the only goal in a 1-0 victory by the Lady Demons.  The two teams played a very even and exciting match the rest of the way with numerous scoring opportunities.  Westlake had two shots deflect off goal posts and for the Shoregals seniors Cara Dannemiller and Ali Robinson along with freshman Lauren Anthony had shots on goal which were saved by the Westlake goalie.

After that opening minute, the Avon Lake defense dug in and did an excellent job of stymieing the defending District and SWC champion Westlake’s offense.  Leading the defensive charge for the Shoregals were seniors Emily Peterson and Natalie Quintero along with junior Rada Zunich and freshman Kellie Norris.  This group was bolstered by subs Esther Killius a junior and sophomores Maggie Moore, Addy Poole, & Bri Carlin.  In addition, Emily Peterson was credited with a block of a shot on goal.

In goal for Avon Lake, senior Amy Crooks made 12 saves in the match and Westlake senior goalie Mackenzie Maynard recorded 3 saves on the night.
