A Historic isle Restoration

Spring has sprung, and the picturesque Avon Isle building surrounded by French Creek will soon be accessible to the residents of Avon.

The first phase, which involved remodeling the upstairs and the exterior of the building, is complete.

Renovations included the dance floor, main floor, ceiling, windows, walls, and new bathrooms. External additions included a new roof, siding, and porch – including a wheelchair accessible ramp.

Phase two of the project, the renovation of the downstairs, will continue to be a work in progress as money become available.

“We got a little more done than we expected because there were a few things we didn’t have to do as far as the sewer goes," said . "Because of that we were able to do more physical things that people can actually see and appreciate.”

The project will now shift its focus onto the surrounding areas of the building. Smith said that the city will concentrate on adding landscaping, shrubbery, flowers, and other amenities such as park benches and picnic tables to provide an attractive area for families to visit.

“The main part is done so now we can move onto the fun part,” said Smith.  “The people of Avon will be able take their visions and use them to create a place for the community to meet.” 

Organizations such as , Avon Historical Society, Avon Garden Club, and other city clubs will all be able to contribute to the aesthetic portion of the renovation process.

Although the building is fully functional, Smith said that the building is not ready to be rented out.

“As of right now, we have made it very usable but we want to take our time putting it together,” he said. “It’s not for a money maker; it’s for a city service and a service for all of the organizations in the community.”
