Bargain Hunters Delight For Aunt Teak and Uncle Junque

Avon's big antique festival is this weekend

Everybody's favorite aunt and uncle are coming to town June 25 and 26, and Avon residents are preparing for their arrival.

Perhaps the city's best-known event, the Aunt Teak and Uncle Junque sale will take place that weekend from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Some times will vary according to business owners' discretion.

Shops along Detroit Road from Route 611 to Center Road will have in-store and sidewalk sales, antique vendors will be set up along the strip, and Avon residents will have yard sales all over the city. Maps will be available in stores.

Lori Miles, owner of and , said the annual event has been going on for more than 20 years and has attracted people from all over Ohio.

“It's fun to see the Amish pulling up in their buggies and people from all over coming to the event," Miles said. "We advertise all over the place. It's become a destination event. It's kind of what Avon is known for.”

Miles said the event really benefits the local economy.

“It's a chance for merchants to benefit,” she said. “People have extra cash in their pockets. People in the city get rid of things they don't need, so they come in and buy things they do. A lot of people are offering really good things.”

The event is not only great for the merchants but also for people who are strapped for cash in this tough economy, she said.

“I think it's a positive thing, because if someone is short on funds, it gives them the opportunity to freshen up their home.," she said."They can buy something new or pick up some cash (if they're selling items).”

Most businesses participating in the Aunt Teak and Uncle Junque sale belong to the French Creek Merchants Association. Some French Creek Merchants Association members will not be participating, and some businesses who are not part of the association will be, Miles said.

“I'm hoping to see some new faces, and I'm sure I'll see some old faces,” she said. “We have some fabulous sales at our stores.”

Details and The Littlest Details will offer sales of up to 75 percent off, Miles said.
