Cupcake Wishes Opens in Avon

Way before cupcakes were “in,” Holly Kennedy was creating the mini cakes.

“My grandmother got me interested in making them when I was 9," Kennedy, the owner Cupcake Wishes in Avon, said. “I did it before it was the cool thing to do.”

She baked her way through high school and started making them for family parties.

Make no mistake about it, Kennedy wasn’t creating birthday cakes or pies.

“It’s always been cupcakes,” she said.

So it’s no surprise that she is opening a retail cupcake store on Detroit Road, across from the Avon gazebo in the heart of the French Creek District.

The store, which opens at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 26, will complement the already burgeoning corporate side of the business.

“My first order paid for my website,” she said.

Presently, in addition to supplying cupcakes for Sherwin-Williams in Cleveland, she fills about 20 orders a week out of her home.

Now she will be making—and selling—cupcakes in the pink adorned store that includes a pink mixer and shiny new convection oven.

“I stayed home with my son, Rocco, when he was born,” Kennedy said. “When he was 18 months old, everything was clean and organized and I thought, ‘What can I do?’”

Now 4 and a half, Rocco accompanies his mother to the store, which will be open Monday through Saturday.

The opening can't happen soon enough. During a recent interview, several residents popped their heads in saying they "can't wait" for the store to open.

A display case will show off the creations, with a new flavor offered daily. Flavors will be posted daily on her Facebook site.

Today she was offering Mississippi Mud cupcakes drizzled with chocolate and covered in a mousse frosting and topped with mini marshmallows. (Editor’s note: Yes, the cupcakes are that good.)

“By far our best seller is Peanut Butter Cup,” she said. “Another favorite is the Bacon Bomb with chocolate and heath bar.”

More than two dozen flavors, listed on the store’s website, include the Arnold Palmer, “Fresh Lemonade cake topped with sweet tea buttercream,” Pina Colada, Pumpkin Spice, Mimosa and Margarita. Special orders are available as are cupcake bouquets giant cupcakes and party trays.

She is already looking ahead to participating in future Avon events and is planning a Sinatra day on Dec. 12, Frank Sinatra’s birthday.

The avid fan said Blue Velvet (for Ole Blue Eyes) and orange (Sinatra’s favorite color) cupcakes will be available.

Tentatively, the store will be open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. -  5 p.m. or when they sell out of cupcakes. On Saturdays, hours are 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. or until sellout. The store is closed on Sundays.

Cupcake Wishes will also be selling coffee and vintage soda. Prices are $2 for a cupcake and $2.25 for a specialty. Corporate orders are welcome as are specialty orders, with a five-day notice.

Parking is available in the front and rear, behind the old French Creek Tavern.
