Farm Markets Opening for Summer

Locally grown produce, plants available at Fitch's

Summer has finally come to Northeast Ohio. That means  hot weather, swimming, and family vacations.

For Avon, it also means the start of locally grown produce season.

has been open since mid-April but is getting ready for the summer season.

The farm has had slow growth of its crops because of the rain and storms that have blown through the area in the past few weeks.

Rita Fitch, co-owner with her husband Dick, said last week that she wasn't sure when Fitch's would open its annual pick-your-own-strawberries event.

“Strawberries will be coming, but we're not sure how they're going to be because of the weather,” she said. “We will have strawberries, but I'm not sure how many.”

The Fitches have started planting some crops, including sweet corn. But the cold, wet weather of the past few weeks has put them a little behind schedule.

In the meantime, Fitch's does have asparagus and lettuce for sale, along with other vegetable plants and flowers.

“We have annuals, flats, hanging baskets and potted planters,” Fitch said.

Despite not yet having the produce they normally have around this time, Fitch tried to stay positive.

“The horrible rain did a lot of damage a couple of nights ago on any progress we made (with the crops)," she said. "We're trying to be positive about the future. We're grateful we're not along the Mississippi River. Things are not all doom and gloom.”

Fitch's Farm Market is open Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Holiday hours for the Fourth of July and Labor Day will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

will open June 11.  Summer and fall hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
