Irish Heritage Club Disbanding, Ahern Center Remains in Business

Club rented space inside of Ahern's, which has not been affected.

The Irish Heritage Social Club in Avon Lake will be disbanding by the end of December, but Ahern Catering & Banquet Center, where the club is located, will remain in business.

Ahern’s event coordinator, Lucy Balser, said the club took up a “small bar area” in the center. Membership in the club, which has been active for more than 20 years, has been diminishing in recent years.

“Ahern’s is absolutely fine,” Balser said. “I’ve had bride’s mothers calling up and assure them nothing (at Ahern’s) has changed.”

Ahern's Banquet Center & Catering on Avon Belden Road functions as a wedding and event hall and caterer.

Some confusion might be the result of the center’s former name (the Irish Heritage Center) before it was purchased, renovated and renamed by Ahern.

The Irish Heritage Club, which in its heydey counted more than 1,000 members, rented space in Ahern and was listed as a 501-C(3) non-profit club. Entrance was by a side door at Ahern.

Listed as “club hall rental – social club pub,” the organization, which was founded in 1987, brought in $69,000 according to its 2009 tax returns.

The club hosted Irish speakers and held Irish events at the club, including a popular St. Patrick’s Day party.

Balser said Ahern’s will evaluate the bar area the club used before deciding what to do with the space.

Its such a shame! I have been a member at the IHC for years, even tho I am not Irish! it was a wonderful club! I had my wedding reception there, I have met so many friends there over the years that I am still friends with! I used work there and I also taught Ballroom dance lessons in the Halls. It was great to have a private club to enjoy and to get involved with. Now its an end of an Era... unfortunately due to poor management and some bad decisions by some past presidents and board members! Its funny, how as a club WE all made the decision to Let Ahern Catering in as our exclusive caterer when he started out! and when we got in trouble financially he ended up buying the whole place!!! it was nice of him to let us stay a couple years.... but it would of been nicer if he did NOT KICK US OUT ! ! ! You would think you would take care of the place & people that made him into what he is today! and let us stay there until the end! So Sad..... an end of an era... Thanks for the memories... Slainte.

It is very sad to see the Irish Heritage Club close after all the hard work so many good people put into building it. Volunteers are the foundation of any non profit organization and unfortunately the club just does not have enough of them to hold functions to keep it open. The clubs CHOICE to close was based on lack of participation and general apathy. The proposal to close was put to the current membership and they voted to close(the Pub and memberhsip) at then end of december. They had the choice to continue to stay at the Ahern Banquet Center as a tenent, but with so few active members decided they lacked the support to continue.

Such sad news. Will the pipe band still exist?

Yes Kathleen the Pipe band will continue :) Just wanted to say what a sad Last Christmas party it was at the IHC last Sat. and even sadder is how the last day on Sunday ended! alot of people planed on coming Sunday to meet with friends and exchange gifts one last time in our old clubs familiar surrounding's. I was meeting a few friends at 6:00 PM and got a call not to come! for some strange reason the Pubs accountant (Dino) took it upon himself to shut the lights off on everyone ordering them out and told them if they opened another bottle of wine he would call the police on them! my friend stated to Dino to put the lights back on befor someone fell and hurt themselves! I was in total disbelief that he took this upon himself to close in this rude way! He is NOT the Pub manager or the President or the landlord he had NO right to close like that ! we had every right to stay there as per the pub manager until the bartender was ready to close! What a horrible way to close on our last day!
