Jenni Juggs Opens in Avon Lake

Southern Style Cooking is on the menu in Learwood Plaza.

It might have taken an extra month, but in Learwood Plaza is officially open and serving Southern Comfort food.

“We had a problem with the hood,” Paul Sakal, who co-owns the resatuarant with daughter, Jenni Sakal, said.

Regardless Avon Lake’s newest restaurant is open and ready to serve. The space that occupied a former Italian restaurant has been redone top to bottom, and includes tables and booths, charming Southern décor (complete with whiskey jugs, washboards) and Christmas-type lights wound through the high ceilings.

Old-time family photos adorn the walls, including black and white photos of Jenni's grandparents.

Visitors might first notice the charming southern décor, but will be immediately taken with the smells of the Southern-Style cooking including rotisserie chicken, ribs with sweet and tangy sauce, smoked brisket or perhaps a “bodacious burger” or chicken and waffles.

Side dishes abound with French fires, pinto beans, steamed rice, hush puppies, coleslaw and macaroni twists and cheese ($2.50 each).

If you’re looking for the exotic, Jenni Juggs serves fried gator tail, a plentiful plate for $8.99 or “Booze Battered Brilliance, crispy beer-battered  shrimp served with cocktail sauce for $8.99.

The restaurant also serves specialty sandwich’s (brisket, Ruebens and Monte Cristos) and full dinners that include two sides.

Cast iron cooking items (fried chicken, chicken and waffles, filet and seared rib-eye steaks) and “Friends of the Sea (cornmeal crusted catfish, trout or salmon dishes) round out the menu and of course a healthy selection of desserts are available. Dinners range from $9.99 to $12.99, and sandwiches, served with fries, range from $6.99 for an original reuben to $9.99 for a shrimp po-boy.

In addition to soft drinks and sweet tea, Jenny Juggs serves signature coffee drinks, tea, milkshakes and malts.

The store is open Tuesday- Thursday, 11 a.m. – 9 p.m., Friday, 11 a.m. – 10 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. and Sunday brunch, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and regular service 2 p.m .- 9 p.m. Contact the restaurant at 440-653-5255 for takeout service.

Thanks for your input Sandy. I had the spiral mac & cheese (I'm a veggie) and it was excellent. Cornbread too.

That food was terrible. I would not even feed that to a dog. The fries where limp and oil. The sandwhich was so greasy it was like squeezing a spong. The cornbread was so dry it took a glass of water to get it down. If this is home cooking then I can guarentee that you will be in the hospital with heart problems within the month. NOt my home

Thomas must have been having a bad day. We have been there 2 times and my wife is taking friends there for lunch today. The food has been great. I will admit that the first time we were there - at the in between hour of 2PM - the greens were a bit lacking in flavor. But I had them again on the next visit at 5PM and they were excellent. I would describe the food as "Healthy Southern" if there is such a thing. Very delicious, but easy on the grease. The meals come with cornbread, bottomless salad bowl, and 2 sides. You won't leave hungry.

I agree with the good food. The cornbread was delicious and not a bit dry. I will be going back again.

It doesn't look like they have a website and I'm wondering if they have an vegetarian dishes that also don't have milk/cheese. I don't wan to go in and end up just having hush puppies or corn bread.

They have the best Southern Fried Chicken around all avon lakes if you haven't tried it if you don't know what you're missing

We were excited to try it since we live in Avon Lake and decided to support our local businesses. Boy, what a disappointment! The food was probably the worst I've had from a restaurant. We got the fried chicken with sides. The chicken was oversalted...I mean really oversalted! The sides were tasteless and bland (it could be my tastebuds were killed from the oversalted chicken). The best thing was the cornbread stuffing which was pretty good. Not sure what was going on with the twists 'n cheese - it tasted like "cheese in a can". A real disappointment...

I totally agree with you, dude! Horrible...

Been there twice. first time was impressed, 2nd time no so. i agree with another post about the salty chicken. got flat split boneless breast that was hot and seemed right out of the pan, but a thigh and leg that seemed to be setting around for awhile, over cooked and not good at all. seemed like all the employees i saw were very young, now thats not bad if helping out the kids in town, but i wonder who was doing the cooking? need some experience around there on a saturday night. it got busy when we were leaving. maybe just a bad night for us, but stay away from the chicken. so one good, and one not so good visit. our next one will be the decision maker.

Look people, if you are going for Vegan, or vegetarian , first, I applaud you on your wise healthy choice, and second I say back off this place. They said they serve Southern Comfort food. If you've ever been to the South, you know you aren't going to get Vegan or Vegetarian. So go somewhere else and don't knock this place, it's just for someone else, not you. You sound like someone who went to a bar and complained that they were serving alcohol.

I thought it was OK. There were a few flies in the restaurant (but I know they can't control that), and there was a lot of fat in the meat. Except for these couple of problems the rest of the food was great; however, if you have a gift card or coupon I recommend using it now. We were the only ones there for dinner, so I doubt it will be open much longer
