Mentor's unemployment rate held at 5.4 percent in December

The city of Mentor's unemployment rate stayed at 5.4 percent in December while the rate in Lake County and Ohio went up slightly, according to the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services.

The county's unemployment rate went up .2 percent since November to 6.3 percent. Meanwhile, the state's unemployment rate increased .1 percent to 6.6 percent.

Mentor's unemployment rate had dropped to 4.6 percent -- its lowest point since Nov. 2007 -- in October. But the rate jumped .8 in November.

However, the city is still ahead of where it was a year ago. In the December of 2012, Mentor's unemployment rate was 5.8 percent.

The city of Mentor has the third lowest unemployment rate for any city in Ohio with a population of 50,000 or more. It only ranks behind Cleveland Heights and Lakewood.

Mentor's unemployment rate peaked in January and February of 2010 at 8.7 percent.
