Wood & Wine is Mighty Fine

Authentic wood fire pizza, pasta and plenty of wine are the signature of this Avon restaurant.

It was just a few years ago when Avon’s restaurant scene offered only slim pickings.

Now, there is a nice mix of hometown bars, kid-friendly establishments and upscale fare.

Wood & Wine, located on Chester Road in the former Dianna’s Deli, offers all of the above.

A wood-fired pizza oven greets patrons as soon as they walk in. Guests can watch the pizzas as they are assembled before entering the crackling wood fire oven where temperatures can reach over 800 degrees. Two styles of hand tossed crusts are available. Neapolitan is a thinner crust and the Americana is a thicker crust. Flour and tomatoes are imported from Italy.

Classic Italian pizzas include pizza margarita ($9), escargot pizza ($10), basil pesto pizza ($9), the Italian ($13), the white pizza ($12) and truffle and mushroom ($11).

Not in the mood for pizza? Wood & Wine offers a vast assortment of menu items beginning with appetizers not seen on many restaurant menus. Try the duck pot stickers ($8) or escargot ($7.75). If you prefer something a little more familiar, wood-roasted buffalo wings ($9.25 per dozen or $5.50 for a half), bruschetta ($6.75) or baked brie ($9.50) are available as well.

Large salads include a cranberry, pecan and chicken salad ($9), a steak salad ($13) and an herb-marinated grilled salmon salad ($13). All greens are made to order and accented with your choice of dressing.

What would Italian dining be without pasta? Dishes include pasta bolognese ($14), wood roasted chicken ($15), three-cheese, three-layer lasagna ($14), macaroni with smoked Gouda, wood-roasted chicken ($16), veal with mushroom ravioli ($18), vegetarian pasta ($13) and clams and linguini ($16).

Steaks and seafood also share the spotlight at Wood & Wine featuring a bone-in ribeye dinner ($27), filet mignon ($25), pan sautéed grouper ($19) and wood-fired cedar plank salmon ($18).

If the food doesn’t keep you coming back for more, the wine will. The temperature controlled wine cellar contains over 220 selections from 12 different countries including Italy, Austria, the United States, France, Hungary, and Spain, with vintages spanning two centuries.

The list offers choices to complement the cuisine. The wine program offers over 20 great selections of wines by the glass, as well as a special feature selection in which you can choose a flight of three wines. Glasses of wine range from $5.50 to $12. Bottle prices range from $18 to $95. Can’t finish your bottle? Wood & Wine will re-cork and bag the wine for guests to take home.

In addition to the extensive wine selection, Wood & Wine offers a full bar complete with mixed drinks, bottled beers and draft beers. Flat screen televisions grace the bar area offering a comfortable atmosphere to enjoy a few drinks with friends while watching a sporting event.

A private tasting room can accommodate up to 20 people. Perfect for small parties, office luncheons, or whatever your private dining needs are.

The restaurants recently began serving lunches including sandwiches served with a side of house made chips. Check out Da burger ($6.75), the Italian ($7.25), Portobello sandwich ($7), Tuscan chicken Panini ($7.50), and three cheese Panini ($6.50). All menu items are available for take-out.

Ron Miller, of Rocky River, and Jim Andrews, owner of Jackalope Lakeside restaurant in Lorain, are the restaurant’s co-owners.
