Wedgwood is one of the oldest and most respected companies producing china today. In 1759, Josiah Wedgwood established himself as an independent potter at the "Ivy House Works" in Burslem, England. During his first 10 years in business, Wedgwood made many refinements in the production processes for porcelain dinnerware. One of his most important creations was black basalt, a fine-grained stoneware superior to any that had been previously produced. Another watershed Wedgwood creation was creamware. Fired at higher temperatures than traditional English earthenware, creamware was non-porous, extremely durable, and relatively inexpensive. Wedgwood's crowning achievement was Jasperware, non-glazed porcelain featuring classical figures in bas-relief, now virtually synonymous with the Wedgwood name.

Today, Wedgwood remains a market leader in the tableware industry. Oberon is a great example of the culture of quality that has been present at Wedgwood for more than 250 years.
