Home care for spring time.

Now that spring has officially arrived, the weather is finally warmer and we are pretty sure it won't snow anymore, let's chat about giving our homes a tune-up.   By doing these few little tasks you can avoid some big problems, and expenses, down the road.

Here is a handy checklist to get a jumpstart on useful to-dos:

Indoors

  • Clean or replace your furnace filter to maximize your home's HVAC system efficiency.
  • Test your air conditioning system before the temperature rises.
  • Check/replace fire extinguishers and test smoke & fire alarms.
  • Dust and make sure the wattage of light bulbs is correct to avoid potential fire hazard.

Outdoors

  • Check for possible roof damage and make sure gutters and downspouts are clean and pointing away from your homes foundation.
  • Cut back tree limbs and shrubs growing within five feet of the house or that are brushing up against the roof.
  • Check for and repair cracks in your driveway and sidewalk areas.
  • Check faucets for freeze damage and garden hoses for dry rot.

Spring Fever while not really a true medical condition, recent studies have shown that spring fever has some real physiological causes and effects.  As the hours of sunlight increase, winter depression thaws.  The excitement can trigger the brain to secrete endorphins, pain-relieving chemicals that create feelings of well-being.  Additionally, getting out and exercising is proven to be a remarkably effective antidepressant and it's a great way to meet your neighbors and refresh friendships.
