The Birth of the REALTOR Organization

National Association of REALTORS (NAR) protects and helps home sellers, home buyers and Realtors to conduct real estate business in a win-win situation.

In the 1800s, cities had grown larger, people claimed so much of the land, and transactions became more complicated that specialist emerged to keep close tabs on who was buying or selling. Brokering a transaction was now a necessity. The real estate profession was born!

Chicago, 1908, was where/when real estate professionals from across the United States came together to form the National Association of REALTORS (NAR). This group laid the groundwork for the modern way real estate buyers and sellers in America would do business together. NAR created the real estate licensing requirements and a code of ethics. These accomplishments created a win-win situation – the industry progressed.

The path to acquiring real estate has evolved and become straightforward. Albeit, the process has unfortunately become more complex. To protect buyers/sellers the legal, financing and regulatory aspects have become considerably more involved. Today contractual disclosures, addendums and federally enforced regulations (Fair Housing, Americans with Disabilities Act and Truth in Lending, hold NAR members to ever higher standards.

For consumers who think they can do a real estate transaction without a REALTOR, good luck! These folks need the understanding of contractual commitments involved. They are often surprised by how many other issues and people impact their single transaction. I can outline a minimum of 25 separate people who must work in unison to have title transfer on time for both parties to the transaction…..buyer and seller! Thanks NAR for helping us realize the “American Dream”.
